Durham Bulls News Release

(Rochester, NY) Dan Johnson had three hits and scored twice on Tuesday, but the Bulls fell 3-2 at Rochester. Durham now is 5-3 on a 10-game road trip, and all three defeats have been by identical 3-2 scores.

Durham (53-43) fell behind 2-0 as the first five batters reached against Andy Sonnanstine on two hits, two walks and an error. But Sonnanstine got out of the jam, and gave up just a hit and a walk after the first.

The Bulls got one run back in the second when Johnson singled to left, moved to third on a Russ Canzler double to left, and scored on a John Matulia groundout. Durham tied the game in the seventh when Russ Canzler singled home Johnson, who had doubled to left center. However Chase Lambin made a diving stop on Nevin Ashley to end the frame, taking away a hit that would've given Durham the lead.

Rochester took the lead against Mike Ekstrom (4-3), who had just pitched three innings on Sunday. Brandon Roberts reached on an infield hit and was sacrificed to second. After Jason Kubel flew out to left Rene Tosoni, who drove in all three Rochester runs, single to right for the lead.

Durham did rally with one out as Johnson singled and moved to second on a walk to Canzler. However, second baseman Brian Dinkelman robbed Ray Olmedo of a hit on a ground ball that would've loaded the bases, and James Hoey got Mautlia to ground sharply to short to end the game.

Durham remains a half game behind Gwinnett in the South Division, and fell a half game behind Pawtucket in the wild card hunt. Durham continues the series with Rochester on Wednesday at 7:05. Matt Torra takes the mound against rehabbing major leaguer Kevin Slowey. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 6:50.
