Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced the team has signed former South Dakota State guard Megan Vogel and guard Monique Martin. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
Vogel, a 5-foot-11 native of St. Peter, Minn., joins the Lynx following a season as a graduate assistant coach at her alma mater, South Dakota State. With the Jackrabbits, Vogel started all 120 of her team's games over her four-year career and finished second on the school's scoring charts with 1,850 points. She also finished third in career three-pointers with 194 and fifth in career rebounds with 783.
During her senior season in 2006-07, Vogel was the Jackrabbits' top scorer with 17.5 points per game and led SDSU to the quarterfinals of the Women's NIT. She finished the season shooting 49.8 percent from the field and 39.5 percent (62-of-157) from three-point range. Her 154 free throws in her final season set a Jackrabbit single-season record, and her 492 career free throws and 633 free throw attempts also are school records.
She was honored as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America second-team selection in 2007 and was later awarded an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Following her success at South Dakota State, Vogel was selected in the second round (19th overall) of the 2007 WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics, becoming the first Jackrabbit to be drafted by a WNBA team. After being released in training camp, she spent the 2007 season as an intern with the Mystics, assisting in scouting and breaking down film while also practicing with the team.
She graduated from SDSU in May 2007 with a degree in health, physical education and recreation, and now is pursuing a master's degree in sport pedagogy.
Martin, a 5-foot-11 guard from Thomson, Ga., was a 2007 Kodak/WBCA NAIA All-American selection following a stellar senior season at Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon, Ga. She closed out the 2006-07 season leading the Barons in scoring, with an average of 29.5 points per game, rebounding, with 9.8 rebounds per game, and steals, with 3.7 per game. She scored 30 or more points 12 times in her senior season, and scored 50 or more points twice, with a season-high 52 points scored on Nov. 27, 2006, in a game against Edward Waters College.
The Minnesota Lynx will open their 10th Anniversary Season on May 18, 2008, against the Detroit Shock. Season and group tickets are on sale now for this historic season. Be a part of the celebration by calling 612-673-8400, e-mailing tickets@lynxbasketball.com or visiting www.lynxbasketball.com.
