Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced the team has signed former Vanderbilt guard Caroline Williams. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Williams, a 2007 graduate of Vanderbilt, is currently a graduate assistant coach for the Commodores. The 5-foot-10 guard finished her collegiate career with the Vanderbilt and Southeastern Conference record for career 3-point shooting percentage, making 46.5 percent of her 512 long-range attempts, which is also good for second all-time in the NCAA.
Williams was twice a member of the All-Southeastern Conference second team. As a senior, she averaged 12.0 points per game and led the Commodores with 33.0 minutes played per game. In her senior season, Vanderbilt ranked first in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage. The Commodores hit 43.7 percent of their long-range attempts, beating second-place Iowa by 3.5 percentage points in the national standings. Williams led the way for Vanderbilt, hitting 48.7 percent of her 187 3-point attempts. Williams ranked second in the nation by percentage and 16th in threes made (2.7 per game).
For her career, Williams made 46.5 percent of her 3-point attempts (238-of-512), good for second all-time in the NCAA for career 3-point shooting percentage. Notre Dame's Alicia Ratay ended her career in 2003 after making 47.6 percent of her 550 attempts. Williams shattered the SEC's career mark, previously held by 1994 Vanderbilt graduate Julie Powell (203-of-460, 44.1 percent). Williams' 2004-05 shooting display (50.5 percent on 48-of-95 from long range) is best all-time in the SEC among players who averaged more than 1.5 made threes per game.
A native of Rockmart, Ga., Williams walked on to the Commodores' roster in her freshman season. She earned a scholarship in her sophomore season and went on to become a two-year starter and 1,000-point scorer. Born Jan. 26, 1985, she is a graduate of Rockmart High School, where she ranks as the school's all-time leading scorer (boys or girls), scoring 2,310 points during her four-year career.
The Minnesota Lynx will open their 10th Anniversary Season on May 18, 2008, against the Detroit Shock. Season and group tickets are on sale now for this historic season. Be a part of the celebration by calling 612-673-8400, e-mailing tickets@lynxbasketball.com or visiting www.lynxbasketball.com.
