Minnesota Lynx Sign Guard Ashley Awkward

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced the team has signed former Mississippi guard Ashley Awkward. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Awkward, a 2007 graduate of Ole Miss, is currently playing in Australia in the WNBL for the Christchurch Sirens, based in Christchurch, New Zealand. She has averaged 6.7 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists through 23 games this season.

Born Sept. 6, 1985, Awkward concluded her collegiate career on a high note, helping to lead the Rebels to an Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992. Awkward averaged 18.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game during the Rebels' exciting tournament run. She posted a career-best 25 points in guiding Ole Miss to a second-round win over defending national champion Maryland and also tossed in 22 points in their Sweet 16 win over Big 12 Conference champion Oklahoma.

Awkward scored in double figures in the Rebels' final 20 games of the 2007 season, including all 14 Southeastern Conference games. She closed out her final season ranked second on the team in scoring (12.9), assists (2.7) and steals (1.9), all of which were career-highs. She was honored for her efforts with the team's Unsung Hero Award at the end of the season.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Awkward was ranked as the 15th best point guard and 58th best overall player in the country according to the All-Star Girls Report while playing at White Station High School.
