Minnesota Lynx News Release
Minneapolis/St. Paul - The Minnesota Lynx are proud to announce the eight high schools that have earned the distinction of receiving the "Lynx Team of the Week" awards, which includes results through Feb. 7.
This is the 10th consecutive week that the Minnesota Lynx have recognized one girls team and one boys team in each of the state's four classes of competition. The program will continue every week throughout the high school regular season.
This week's recipients are:
Girls Basketball
Class A
Sleepy Eye Saint Mary's is the Class A Lynx Team of the week after extending its winning streak to five games following three wins in the week. The week included wins over Maple River (59-46) on Feb. 1, Wabasso (66-53) on Feb. 4, and Buffalo Lake-Hector (76-49) on Feb. 7. The Knights won 11 of their first 12 games before losing three of their next five. However, thanks to the current streak, the Knights seem to be back on track and stand 18-4 overall and in third place in the Tomahawk Conference at 12-4.
Class AA
Cannon Falls is the Class AA Lynx Team of the Week after winning three games in the week to push its winning streak to five games. Since losing three out of four games in the middle of December, the Bombers have been nearly unbeatable. The Bombers have won 13 of their last 14 games through Feb. 7. The Bombers have held opponents to just 42.7 points per game in that 14-game span, which has helped them improve to 17-6 and a first-place 9-1 in the Hiawatha Valley League-Blue standings.
Class AAA
St. Cloud Cathedral is the Class AAA Lynx Team of the Week after winning three of its last four games. In the week, the Crusaders (7-16) started with a loss to Sauk Centre (60-73) on Feb. 1, but they followed with wins over Milaca (56-35) on Feb. 5, and Paynesville Area (66-44) on Feb. 7. The Crusaders started the season 1-9, but they have since turned things around. Included in the recent four-game span, the Crusaders avenged an earlier 21-point loss to Melrose with an equally impressive 19-point win at home on Jan. 29. They also gave Sauk Centre a much tougher test in the Feb. 1 loss after losing to them by 41 points earlier in the season.
Class AAAA
Woodbury is the Class AAAA Lynx Team of the Week following a trio of victories in the week. Wins over Owatonna (53-38) on Feb. 2, Edina (50-37) on Feb. 4, and Tartan (60-53) on Feb. 6 helped push the Royals' record to 16-5 overall, and a second-place 8-3 in the Suburban East Conference. The Royals have won five games in a row and 10 of their last 12 games. The Royals have held opponents to 42.5 points per game, which is the second-best defensive showing in the conference.
Boys Basketball
Class A
Meadow Creek Christian is the Class A Lynx Team of the Week after three wins in the week. The Saints (9-11) recorded wins over Trinity School (62-43) on Feb. 1, Heritage Christian (76-73 OT) on Feb. 5, and Concordia Academy-Bloomington (87-41) on Feb. 7. After losing six straight games and nine out of 10, the Saints have since won five in a row. The Saints' defense has held opponents to 52.8 points per game in the five-game winning streak, 11.5 fewer points per game than their season average of 64.3. That improvement on defense has the Saints clicking just in time for the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association tournament, which is scheduled to begin later this week.
Class AA
Pine Island is the Class AA Lynx Team of the Week after recording three wins in the week. The Panthers earned wins over Zumbrota-Mazeppa (60-41) on Feb. 1, Lake City (51-50) on Feb. 5, and Dover-Eyota (69-62) on Feb. 7. After starting their season 0-4, the Panthers have won 11 of their last 14 games, including seven of their last eight games. The run has pushed the Panthers (11-7) into first place in the Hiawatha Valley League-Blue standings at 7-1.
Class AAA
Thief River Falls is the Class AAA Lynx Team of the Week after a 2-1 record in the week. Despite the one loss last week against Pelican Rapids (58-68) on Feb. 2, the Prowlers have won eight of their last nine games to improve to 11-4 overall. The Prowlers also pulled off wins against Bemidji (72-69) on Feb. 1 and Crookston (81-50) on Feb. 7. The Prowlers' offense has averaged 69.4 points per game this season, which is the second-highest scoring output in the Northwest Conference.
Class AAAA
Champlin Park is the Class AAAA Lynx Team of the Week following a pair of wins sandwiched around a two-point overtime loss in the week. The week included wins over Andover (67-60) on Feb. 1 and Anoka (79-67) on Feb. 6. The heartbreaking loss came at the hands of Cambridge-Isanti (74-76 OT). After suffering four losses in a five-game stretch in January to fall to 4-7, the Rebels have turned things around with four wins in their last five contests to climb back to .500 (8-8).
