Minnesota Lynx Guard Seimone Augustus Named to All-WNBA Second Team

MINNEAPOLIS/ST.PAUL - After finishing as the WNBA's second-leading scorer for the second consecutive season, Minnesota Lynx guard Seimone Augustus was named to the All-WNBA Second Team, it was announced today by the WNBA. It was the second selection to the Second Team for Augustus, who received 113 points. The voting for the All-WNBA Teams was conducted by a panel of national sportswriters and broadcasters who selected players by position. First Team votes received five points while Second Team votes received three.

"To earn this award and to once again be selected among some of the WNBA's greatest players is an incredible honor for me," said Augustus. "While I have been chosen as a member of the All-WNBA Second Team, it is an award that also recognizes my teammates, coaches and the entire Lynx organization. Without them, I would not be able to enjoy the individual success that I have had in my two seasons in the WNBA."

Augustus (2006, 2007) is the third player in Lynx history to be named to an All-WNBA First or Second Team, joining Betty Lennox (2000) and Katie Smith (1st Team - 2001, 2003 and 2nd Team - 2000, 2002). Both Augustus and Lennox earned Second Team honors as rookies.

Augustus finished the 2007 season as the league's second-leading scorer with 22.6 points per game. She ranked fourth in field goal percentage (50.8 percent), fifth in 3-point shooting percentage (41.9 percent) and seventh in free-throw shooting percentage (87.3 percent). She was also second in scoring in 2006 with 21.9 points per game.

Despite playing fewer minutes per game (32.1) in 2007 compared to 2006 (33.1), Augustus's numbers improved in almost every category, including points per game, field-goal percentage (45.6 in 2006), 3-point shooting percentage (35.3 in 2006), steals per game (1.2 in 2007; 0.6 in 2006); rebounds (4.0 in '07; 3.8 in '06), assists (2.3 in '07; 1.5 in '06), blocks (0.6 in '07; 0.5 in '07), and efficiency (19.2 in '07 - 4th in WNBA; 15.8 in '06 - 12th in WNBA). Augustus was also eighth in the voting for the 2007 WNBA Most Valuable Player award, which went to Seattle Storm center Lauren Jackson. Jackson garnered 473 votes, followed by Becky Hammon (San Antonio, 254), Diana Taurasi (Phoenix, 144), Tamika Catchings (Indiana, 142). Deanna Nolan (Detroit, 93), Penny Taylor (Phoenix, 48), Katie Douglas (Connecticut, 27), and Augustus (20).

On July 29 against the Sacramento Monarchs, Augustus scored a career-high 39 points on 16-of-25 shooting in a 78-73 win in Sacramento, which was Minnesota's first win over the Monarchs since July 11, 2004. It was the highest scoring total in a regulation game in the WNBA this season.

On June 8 in Los Angeles, Augustus scored 28 points on 11-for-11 shooting, setting a WNBA record for the most field goals made without a miss. She became the second-fastest player in WNBA history to score her 1,000th career point on June 16th against the Los Angeles Sparks, doing so in just her 46th WNBA game. She broke her own franchise single-season scoring mark on August 16 against the Detroit Shock and topped the 1,500-point plateau in the final game of the season on August 19 against the San Antonio Silver Stars. She closed the 2007 season with 769 points.

Selected No. 1 in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Lynx, Augustus became the second Lynx player (Betty Lennox) in franchise history to earn WNBA Rookie of the Year honors.

Joining Augustus on the WNBA All-Second Team are forward Tamika Catchings (Indiana, 146 points), guard Katie Douglas (Connecticut, 120 points), forward Tina Thompson (Houston, 116 points), and forward Sophia Young (San Antonio, 70 points). The All-WNBA First Team consists of center Lauren Jackson (Seattle, 243 points), guard Becky Hammon (San Antonio, 217 points), guard Diana Taurasi (Phoenix, 204 points), forward Deanna Nolan (Detroit, 179 points), and forward Penny Taylor (Phoenix, 167 points).
