
Miners Win in Comeback Fashion against Rockford

Rockford, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners won in comeback fashion as they defeated the Rockford RiverHawks 14-11, by scoring six runs in the top of the ninth.
The RiverHawks struck first in the bottom of the first inning off Miners starter Thomas Campbell to take a 3-0 lead. The Miners came right back in the top of the second with scoring three runs to tie it at three a piece. After Carlos Mendez walked with one out and Will Block hit a single, Ken Gregory hit a two run double to bring the Miners within one 3-2. Phil Butler tied the game with a two out single to make it 3-3.
The RiverHawks scored three more in the bottom of the second off Thomas Campbell to take a 6-3 lead. However, the Miners scored another run in the top of the third as Darian Sandford scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4. The RiverHawks added a run in the bottom of the third to make it 7-4.
The Miners tied the game up in the top of the fourth as an error by RiverHawks starter Nick Sarianides allowed two runs to score. Then a groundout by Matt Fields tied the game to make it 7-7. The RiverHawks answered with three more runs off a three run homerun by first baseman Evan Button to make it 10-7 RiverHawks.
Jake Kaase hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to bring the Miners within two. With the score 10-8, the RiverHawks added another run in the bottom of the sixth to give themselves an 11-8 lead.
In the top of the ninth, left fielder Ken Gregory hit a two run homerun with one out to bring the Miners within one run 11-10. Jason Ganek walked; then Cannon Lester tied the game with a base hit and RBI. The next batter was Jake Kaase who walked. Then Chad Maddox with one out hit a go ahead three run home run to give the Miners a 14-11 lead.
Max Peterson (1-0) closed the game in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first victory of the season. The Miners improved to 13-6 on the season.
Gabriel Shaw and Anthony Collazo each tossed two innings.
