Miners Hit Their Way to Victory over Rockford

Rockford, IL - The Miners offense came to light two nights in a row as they defeated the RiverHawks 12-3. Brian Fowler got his third win of the season by pitching five innings, while giving up seven hits and two runs. He walked three and struck out six.

The RiverHawks struck first with one run in the bottom of the first lead to take a 1-0 lead. The Miners quickly answered back in the top of the second inning after Will Block grounded into a double play to bring in Matt Fields from third to tie the game at 1-1. The RiverHawks added another run in the bottom of the third off a solo home run by right fielder Javier Herrera to give the RiverHawks a 2-1 lead.

The Miners broke open the game off Rockford's starter Eric Rohe in the top of the fourth inning. Will Block started the offense going with a base hit and RBI. Darian Sandford with two outs hit a base hit and RBI to score Ken Gregory. Then Jake Kaase hit a three run home run to give the Miners a 6-2 lead.

The Miners came right back in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run by Matt Fields to extend the lead 7-2. Ken Gregory hit an RBI double to give the Miners a 8-2 lead. Two more runs came across the plate to give the Miners a 10-2 lead.

The RiverHawks added one more run with a solo home run by Michael Hur to bring the score within 12-3. The Miners added two more runs. Jake Kaase hit a double that scored Jason Ganek in the top of the seventh and Sean Coughlin scored the final run to give the Miners a 12-3 victory.

Ben Shivers and Ryan Quigley each threw an inning. Albert Ayala threw three two shutout innings. The Miners improve to 14-6 on the 2012 season.

The Miners will be going for the sweep tomorrow as they send RHP Dave Harden to the mound (3-1, 2.63 ERA) as he'll be opposed by RHP Drew Rucinski (1-1, 4.63 ERA). The Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show begins at 2:45 pm with Mike Ventola on the Miners Radio Network. First pitch is at 3:05 pm.
