Gateway Grizzlies News Release

MARION, IL-Miners' second baseman Will Block hit the first home run of his pro career Sunday night, a walk-off shot, with two outs in the 12th inning to lead Southern Illinois to a 2-1 win in game two of a three-game series at Rent One Park.

The home run was the only hit of the night for Block and the only hit allowed by Grizzlies' reliever Joel Boeschen. Boeschen (1-4) suffered the loss, working 1.2 innings. He struck out two.

The Grizzlies (27-37) left the bases loaded in the top of the 12th inning. Brandon Johnson walked with one out in the inning. Alex Kerins followed with a single, and Peter Tountas walked. Brandon Peters grounded to short. Tony Roth threw home to force out Johnson, leaving the bases loaded with two outs. Joe Agreste struck out to end the inning.

Gateway thwarted an earlier threat in extra innings by Southern Illinois. With the bases loaded and one out in the 10th inning, Roth hit a fly ball to right field. Scaperotta made the catch then fired home, cutting down Brad Goldsmith, keeping the score tied 1-1.

The Grizzlies only run came in the fifth inning when Johnson lifted his 12th homer of the year into the Miners' bullpen in right field. The shot tied the score at one apiece.

Southern Illinois (34-30) scored their first run in the first inning. Jereme Milons led off with a ground rule double to right field corner, was sacrificed to third and then scored on a double-steal. The Grizzlies failed to get the runner at second and Milons scored on the play to put Southern Illinois up 1-0.

Jamie Arneson started for the Grizzlies and did not get a decision, working seven innings. He allowed the one run on four hits. He struck out six. Former Miner Chris Wiman, acquired last week in a trade, worked three scoreless innings in relief.

Tountas and Agreste were the only players to have more than a hit for the Grizzlies, who had just seven. Tountas was 2-4 with a triple and a single. Agreste was 2-6 with two singles.

The Grizzlies and Miners will play the finale of the three-game set Monday night at Rent One Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
