Sussex County Miners News Release
Augusta, NJ - An eight-run mid game surge by the Sussex County Miners (59-32) brought the home side one step closer to the franchise's first regular season championship as they downed the Quebec Capitales (53-40) by a score of 11-5 on Friday night at Skylands Stadium. The win trimmed the Miners magic number to clinch the regular season championship down to 4.
After Quebec scored a run on three straight singles in the top of the third inning, Miners catcher Christian Correa would hit a solo home run to immediately pull the Miners even at one run apiece. Mikey Reynolds would soon follow with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1 Miners and set the stage for the bigger surge later on.
The contest turned to the Miners' favor further in the 4th when, with one out, a Nick Zaharion pop-up was dropped by TJ White, scoring Daniel Mateo and giving the Miners a 3-1 lead. Then, in the fifth, the Miners offense exploded for five runs. The outburst was initiated by a two-run single by Reynolds, expanding the lead to 5-1. A run scoring double by Audy Ciriaco followed by a two-run double by Martin Figueroa made the score 8-1 and sent the Miners on their way.
Cory Jones (10-3) picked up the win for the Miners, settling a new franchise record for wins in a season in the process. Cory went seven and two-thirds innings for Sussex County, who turned to Edward Cruz to finish out the game. Wendell Floranus (2-3) took the loss for Quebec in going three innings.
The two teams will meet again at Skylands Stadium on a very busy Saturday at the ballpark. The grand opening of the new Champions Way Sports Academy will take place at noon, followed by Ladies Night at the Stadium, with gates opening at 4 pm. A 6:05 first pitch is scheduled, and there will be fireworks at the conclusion of the ball game.
