Sussex County Miners News Release
Augusta, NJ - They say it's not about how you start, it's about how you finish - for the Sussex County Miners (4-3), that became ever more prevalent as they split a twilight doubleheader with the Trois-Rivieres Aigles (3-3) on Thursday night, dropping the first game 7-1 before walking off the second game 5-4 in extra innings at Skylands Stadium.
Game one saw Miners manager Bobby Jones elect to send Mark McCoy to the rubber, but the story of the game was Aigles starter Kevin McNorton, a long reliever making the second start of his professional career. McNorton threw seven innings to earn the win and give McNorton his first decision of the young season.
Taylor Brennan lead the way for Trois-Rivieres, going 3-for-4 in game one, including a line drive home run over the left center field wall in the fourth, as Les Aigles touched up McCoy for seven runs in 3.2 innings. The Miners' southpaw exit early, forcing Jones to call upon his bullpen early.
After walking the first batter he faced, newly-signed Alex Fishberg threw 2.1 innings of perfect relief, retiring the next seven batters. Though Fishberg froze the offense of Trois-Rivieres, McNorton had all the run support he needed - he needed only 92 pitches to go the distance, leading Trois-Rivieres to the 7-1 victory in game one of the doubleheader.
The action wasn't over, as the Miners and the Aigles played a Game 2 as part of a twilight doubleheader. The first two innings saw the Miners' starter Gianni Zayas get into two consecutive innings of two runners finding bases without any outs, but Zayas escaped both of those innings unscathed. Zayas came back in the third inning and got three quick outs to keep the game scoreless. Trois-Rivieres broke the stalemate in the fourth, as a Javier Herrera single and a Brennen two-run home run gave the Aigles the 2-0 lead. The Miners didn't see a hit until the sixth inning, as Aigles starting pitcher Kramer Sneed entered the sixth inning with a no-hitter. However, that was broken in the sixth, as between a Christian Correa walk, a Mikey Reynolds double, a balk by Sneed that allowed a run, and a sacrifice fly by Jarred Mederos, the Miners tied the game at two.
The game would go to extra innings for the second night in a row, with the score tied at two. After Miners relieve Kenny Koplove allowed the bases to be loaded, he got three straight outs to keep the score at two. In a bottom of the eighth that saw the Miners get two runners on base with no outs, they couldn't get either of the runs in. In top of the ninth inning, the Aigles had two runners cross the plate to take a 4-2 lead. The Miners would play a fantastic bottom of the ninth, as Luis Alen drew a dropped third strike two pull the Miners within one. In the next at-bat, Breland Almadova lined a single to tie the game at 4 runs apiece. The Miners would pull off their second walk-off in two nights as a Correa sacrifice fly scored Alen from third to give the Miners a huge 5-4 come from behind win.
The Miners will be in action throughout Memorial Day Weekend, as they host the Ottawa Champions. The first game of the three game series will be tomorrow evening at 7:05 at Skylands Stadium.
