Miners Lose Late Lead as Boomers Sweep Series

June 23, 2019 - Frontier League (FL) - Southern Illinois Miners News Release

Schaumburg, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners led for nearly the entire game on Sunday afternoon in Schaumburg, but watched the Boomers score four times in the bottom of the eighth, then thwart a late comeback to win the game 5-4 as they swept the Miners at Boomers Stadium.

In the top of the second inning, Stephen Lohr hit a one-out single and Alex Santana crushed a two-run home run to left-center field off Boomers starter Orlando Rodriguez to make it 2-0. Schaumburg got a run back in the bottom half of the inning, but Chase Cunningham kept the Miners in front when Jimmy Galusky lined out to Kyle Davis at third base to strand the bases loaded.

Cunningham then settled into a groove, permitting just the one run in seven strong innings of work with one walk and three strikeouts to hold the home team down. Just before he departed, in the top of the eighth, the Miners made a two-out rally as Santana walked against Dylan Stutsman, followed by a double to center field by Jarrod Watkins. With runners at second and third base, Joe Duncan lined an infield RBI single off the pitcher to bring in an insurance run and put the Miners up 3-1.

But things unraveled with two outs and the bases empty in the bottom of the eighth. A walk and a single put the tying runs on against Benjamin Dum, and the Miners brought in Jordan Brink to try and get out of the jam. But the right-hander walked the first two batters he faced, a wild pitch bringing in the Boomers' first run of the frame and making it 3-2. Brink (0-2) then hit Zach Taylor with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the tying run, and Jack Parenty singled up the middle to score two more runs and make it 5-3 Schaumburg.

The Miners attempted another comeback in the ninth, as Anthony Jimenez reached second base on an error by Alex Polston at shortstop, followed by a single by Gianfranco Wawoe and a walk by Davis to load the bases with none out. A diving stop at third base by Brock Carpenter turned into a double play, bringing home Jimenez to make it 5-4, but Santana flew out with the tying run at second base to end the game.

The Miners will look to rebound at home, hosting the Windy City ThunderBolts in a three-game series beginning on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. Marty Anderson will start the game on the mound against Windy City's Kenny Mathews at Rent One Park.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League's most-successful franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016.
