Sauget, IL - The Miners use three home runs in the third inning and a fourth in the eighth to put away Gateway 8-3 in the series opener.

The Miners answered back with a two-run homer of their own courtesy of Jarrod Watkins to tie the game at two in the third inning. Ariel Sandoval's three-run home run in the same inning made the score 5-2 Miners. Southern Illinois still wasn't done, as Anthony Brocato blasted a two-run homer to center field to push the Miners' lead to 7-2 in the third inning.

Both offenses were quiet until the seventh inning when Justin Jones hit his second home run, a solo shot, in as many games to pull Gateway within four at 7-3.

Bryant Flete had the answer once again for Southern Illinois in the next half inning in the eighth with a solo homer of his own to push the lead back to five at 8-3 Miners.

Jake Fisher went seven innings allowing six hits, three runs, all earned, and no walks while striking out three.
