Clearwater Threshers News Release

McKenzie Mills dealt seven innings of two-run ball on Friday night, but the Florida Fire Frogs rallied to overtake the Threshers late as Clearwater suffered a 5-2 loss in the series opener at Osceola County Stadium.

Mills racked up eight strikeouts in the no-decision, limiting Florida (11-11) (40-48) to just two runs on five hits and a pair of walks.

Jose Pujols finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored, while Jose Gomez went 2-for-5 in his third straight game in the leadoff spot.

Clearwater (11-10) (43-46) opened the scoring in the fourth against Fire Frogs starter Ian Anderson. After Pujols walked and Arquimedes Gamboa reached on an error on second baseman Kevin Josephina, Kyle Martin's fly to right advanced both runners into scoring position.

With two down, Raul Rivas reached on a bunt single, which pushed across Pujols to put Clearwater up, 1-0.

The Threshers extended the advantage an inning later, after Gomez singled, and a wild pitch on ball four to Mickey Moniak placed runners at the corners. Gamboa came through with a two-out single to center, bringing in Gomez to make it 2-0.

Mills held Florida off the board until the seventh, when Jordan Rodgers tripled home a run, and Garrison Schwartz followed with a sacrifice fly to tie the game.

The Fire Frogs took the lead an inning later facing reliever Grant Dyer (0-1). A bases loaded single by Braxton Davidson brought in a pair of runs, and Rodgers knocked in a third with a base hit to put Florida up 5-2.

Game two of the three-game set will take place on Saturday at 6:31 p.m., as the Threshers send Ramon Rosso to the hill against lefty Joey Wentz.
