YESTERDAY'S NEWS: Tampa completed a series-win at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium, defeating the Hammerheads, 5-1, to take three-of-four in Jupiter...The Tarpons also win the season-series, 6-2...RHP Nick Nelson (W, 5-2) held Jupiter scoreless for 6.0IP (1H, 4BB, 5K)...Isiah Gilliam (1-for-3, HR, Sac-F, 2RBI, R) clubbed his 11th homer...Dom Thompson-Williams (2-for-3, 2RBI, BB, SB) and Diego Castillo (1-for-3, Sac-F, RBI, R) also drove in runs...Brandon Wagner (2-for-4, 2R) also had a multi-hit game...RHP Kaleb Ort (1.1IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 1K) made his Tarpons debut...RHP Greg Weissert (1.2IP, 2H, 1ER, 0BB, 0K) closed the game.
DAY GAME GLORY: The Tarpons are now 14-4 (.778) in games that start before 5:00 p.m.
WAGS IS REACHING: Brandon Wagner (2-for-4, 2R) singled in the 1st-inning on Thursday, extending his on-base streak to 24-straight games. During that stretch, Wagner is batting .342 (27-for-79) with 20R, 3 doubles, 6HR, 20RBI, 18BB and 5HBP and has an OBP of .485. The 22-year-old owns the longest active on-base streak in the Florida State League.
VS. DUNEDIN: Tonight will be the 10th of 15 scheduled between the Tampa Tarpons and Dunedin Blue Jays. Tampa currently leads the season-series, 6-3, including 3-1 at GMS Field and 3-2 at Dunedin Stadium. Diego Castillo has played in all nine matchups and is batting .313 (10-for-32) with 6R, 3 doubles, 1 triple, 1HR, 5RBI, 1BB and 1SB in the series.
STRIKEOUT KINGS: Garrett Whitlock (8K) and Matt Wivinis (2K) combined for 10 strikeouts on Wednesday. Tampa pitchers have tallied double-digit strikeouts in 42 games this season, with the Tarpons going 25-17 in such games. Tampa, by far, leads the Florida State League in strikeouts, totaling 871K entering today. That is 92K more than the team ranked second (Clearwater - 779K). Tampa is averaging 9.68 K-per-game and is on pace for 1,355K, which would crush its own FSL single-season strikeout record set last season with 1,215K.
REAL DIEHL: LHP Phillip Diehl turned in another dominant performance on Tuesday, striking out five the six batters he faced in a pair of perfect innings. Diehl is tied for third among all pitchers in the Florida State League with 79 strikeouts. Among FSL relievers, the 23-year-old ranks 1st in K/9.0IP (14.61), 1st in fewest baserunners/9.0IP (9.25) and tied for 2nd in holds (6).
ROAD TO RECOVERY: Both Estevan Florial and Keith Skinner began rehab assignments in the Gulf Coast League last week. So far, Florial is batting .400 (4-for-10) with 5R, 1HR, 4BB, 2RBI and 4SB in four games, playing two games in centerfield (five-innings each). Skinner has played catcher in three of four games (five-innings each), batting .222 (2-for-9) with 2RBI, 2BB and a Sac-F.
BABY BOMBERS: The Tarpons currently lead the league with 77 home runs, which is 10 more than second on the list (Bradenton- 67HR).
SENSLEY'S SOLOS: On Friday, Steven Sensley clubbed his 13th home run (third with Tampa). All 13 have been solo home runs.
FOR STARTERS: RHP Adonis Rosa (9-2-1, 3.58) will make his 12th start (17th appearance). Last time out, started and held the Flying Tigers scoreless for 5.0IP (2H, 1BB, 5K, 79P/49S) in a win at Lakeland on 7/8...is 6-2 with a 3.67 ERA (54.0IP, 55H, 28R/22ER, 17BB, 54K, 6HR, 3HB) in 11 starts...is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA (21.1IP, 21H, 8ER, 5BB, 18K) as a reliever...named a 2018 FSL Mid-Season All-Star.
VS. DUNEDIN: In two starts against the Blue Jays, Rosa is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA (10.0IP, 9H, 2ER, 4BB, 12K, 1HR).
2017: Pitched primarily for Single-A Charleston, going 4-3 with two saves and a 3.04 ERA (83.0IP, 77H, 35R/28ER, 14BB, 79K, 8HR) in 21 games (eight starts)...was promoted to Tampa on 8/8 and won all three starts while posting a 4.32 ERA (16.2IP, 15H, 8ER, 4BB, 16K, 1HR)...also made two spot starts for Triple-A Scranton/WB on 6/17-G2 at Buffalo (W, 6.0IP, 6H, 0R, 0BB, 4K) and 7/18-G2 vs. Norfolk (ND, 6.0IP, 3H, 2ER, 1BB, 3K, 1HR)...overall, was 8-3 with two saves and a 3.06 ERA (111.2IP, 101H, 45R/38ER, 19BB, 102K, 10HR) in 26 games (13 starts)...had a 1.64 ERA (44.0IP, 8ER) in 13 outings as a reliever...also tossed 6.0 scoreless relief innings (4H, 0BB, 7K) in Game 1 of the FSL Semifinal Series at Dunedin...following the season, pitched for Cibao of the Dominican Winter League, going 1-1 with a 1.82 ERA (24.2IP, 14H, 6R/5ER, 8BB, 21K, 1HR) in nine games (three starts).
