Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill. - Despite a strong start from Ryan Tapani, the Kane County Cougars fell to the Milwaukee Milkmen on Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Milkmen came back from a three-run deficit to score seven straight runs for a 7-3 final.
Kane County (29-28) led 3-2 entering the top of the ninth before the Milkmen (27-28) bats exploded for a five-run frame. Against Cougars reliever Ryan Richardson (3-1), Milwaukee started the ninth with four straight hits. Logan Trowbridge's RBI double drove in two runs to put Milwaukee ahead 4-3 and Christ Conley followed that up with another double to make it 5-3. The Milkmen added two more runs on a double from Wil Kengor and a single from Mason Davis to make it 7-3.
Prior to Milwaukee's comeback, Kane County starter Ryan Tapani delivered a great outing. The right-hander allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out eight hitters and walking just two.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead against Milwaukee starter Ryan Zimmerman. In the bottom of the first, Ernie De La Trinidad led off the game with a walk before a Jimmy Kerrigan single pushed him to third. The next batter, Cornelius Randolph, grounded into a fielder's choice allowing De La Trinidad to score to make it 1-0.
Kane County added two more runs to the lead in the second and fourth innings. In the second, Sherman Johnson led off the frame with a solo homer down the left field line to increase the edge to two runs. Then in the fourth, De La Trinidad drove in Alexis Pantoja with a sacrifice fly to put the Cougars ahead by three.
In the top of the seventh, Milwaukee's bats got started against Tapani. Aaron Hill and Christ Conley both belted solo homers to cut the Cougars' lead to just one run. After Tapani departed, Ryan Richardson recorded the final out of the seventh frame and a 1-2-3 eighth inning. Milwaukee reliever Kyle Huckaby (1-1) earned the win by pitching a scoreless eighth inning prior to the Milkmen's big ninth inning.
Following an off day on Monday, Kane County hits the road for a six-game road trip at Lake Country and Sioux Falls. The Cougars return to Northwestern Medicine Field for a six-game homestand beginning on Tuesday, July 26th. Promotions for the upcoming homestand include Bark in the Park Night on July 26th, Schitt's Creek Night on Thursday, July 28th, and Christmas in July Night on Saturday, July 30th.
