Halifax Mooseheads News Release
Alex Doucet had a hat trick and Attilio Biasca scored a game-clinching goal late in regulation as the Halifax Mooseheads skated away with an important 6-4 victory over the Moncton Wildcats on Sunday afternoon at the Avenir Centre.
The win helped the Herd pull even in points once again with the idle Quebec Remparts at the top of the QMJHL standings and was the 45th victory of the season for Halifax, the fifth most recorded in a single season in franchise history. The Mooseheads have six games remaining in the regular season and watched their record improve to 45-10-4-3.
BOX SCORE
The hat trick for Doucet gave him 52 goals on the season along with 101 points, while teammate Josh Lawrence added an assist in the game to also reach the 100-point plateau for the year. Jordan Dumais, Alex Doucet and Josh Lawrence are the first QMJHL trio of teammates to each score 100+ points in a season in 17 years. Chicoutimi's Stanislav Lascek, Maxime Boisclair and David Desharnais were the last to do it when they accomplished the feat in 2005-06. This marks the second time the Mooseheads have had three players finish with at least 100 points each, with Ramzi Abid, Benoit Dusablon and Brandon Reid doing it in 1999-2000.
While the win was important for the Herd in the standings, it was equally as costly for the Wildcats who had entered the day tied with Rimouski with 65 points in a fight for third in the Eastern Conference. The Oceanic blanked Rouyn-Noranda 3-0 on Sunday to pull ahead of Moncton in the standings. If the playoffs began today, Halifax would be the second seed in the conference and would face Cape Breton in the first round, while Moncton would be the fourth seed and face Chicoutimi.
The Mooseheads got off to a roaring start but needed to dig deep for the victory after a rally by the home squad. Doucet scored his 50th of the season just a couple minutes into action while Jordan Dumais made it a 2-0 lead with his 48th at the 5:34 mark. Halifax outshot the Cats 17-5 in the first period but Moncton got one back on the power play off the stick of Charles Beaudoin.
The Wildcats kept coming in the middle stanza and pulled even at 2-2 just 1:51 into the period when Oscar Plandowski's point shot got by Mathis Rousseau to tie it. The Moose regained the lead on a power play strike from Evan Boucher at 11:33 but watched as Moncton tied it again 3-3 just over a minute later on a Maxim Barbashev tally. The Moose were on their heels after the goal and the Wildcats took their first lead of the afternoon only 61 seconds after the Barbashev goal when Jonas Taibel put them ahead 4-3. The Cats took that lead into the final period of regulation but the third period belonged to Halifax as the visitors scored the final three goals of the game. Alex Doucet's 51st of the season tied it 4-4 on the power play early on and the Moose held sustained pressure throughout the final 20 minutes leading to a huge go-ahead marker by Attilio Biasca with only 1:38 remaining in the game. Doucet capped off the win with an empty net goal to complete the hat trick and Rousseau finished with 16 saves for his league-leading 33rd win of the season.
Mathieu Cataford had a pair of assists in the victory, while Lawrence, Dumais, Biasca, Markus Vidicek and Brady Schultz had the other helpers.
Halifax will return home to Scotiabank Centre for a game on Wednesday night at 7pm versus the Acadie-Bathurst Titan and will have a rematch at home against the Wildcats next Sunday at 2pm. Tickets for both games are on sale now at TicketAtlantic.com.
