Portland Sea Dogs News Release
The Portland Sea Dogs have announced that Mike Bordick will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on Opening Day, April 7th, at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs enter their twelfth season of play and third as the Class-AA Affiliate of the Boston Red Sox in 2005. The Thursday, April 7th opener is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm as the Sea Dogs host the Norwich Navigators (Giants).
Bordick is no stranger to Maine. He attended high school at Hampden Academy, and went on to play baseball for the University of Maine at Orono. Bordick was signed by the Oakland Athletics as an amateur free agent in 1986. He went on to spend thirteen seasons in the big leagues with four different teams: the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles, New York Mets, and Toronto Blue Jays. A career .260 hitter, Bordick is best remembered for his defense. In the 2002 season he set fielding records for consecutive chances without making an error (543), and consecutive games without committing an error (110). Both streaks set records for shortstops. Bordick committed only one error in the entire 2002 season, and went on to compile a .998 season fielding percentage. Bordick retired after the 2003 season at the age of 38. He now resides in Falmouth with his wife Monica, and their five children.
Presenting the colors for the game will be members of the United States Army. A symphony of high school bands from around Maine will come together to play the National Anthem. The symphony will consist of bands from Bangor Christian, Boothbay, Dexter, Georges Valley, Lake Region, Mattanawook Academy, Massabesic, Mt. Ararat, Oak Hill, Sacopee Valley, and Wiscasset High Schools. As usual, Slugger has a special grand entrance planned.
As fans enter the park they will be greeted by the Bellamy Jazz Band. Gates open at 4:00pm. Pre-game ceremonies will begin at approximately 6:00pm, with the first pitch scheduled for 6:30pm.
Tickets for Opening Day and all other home games are available by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-879-9500 or on-line at www.seadogs.com.
