Baysox Announce 2005 Roster

The Bowie Baysox, class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles have announced the Season Opening Player Roster as set by their parent Orioles on Saturday afternoon. Fifteen returnees highlight the Bowie Baysox Opening Day roster, including two former first round picks and three top ten Orioles prospects as announced by the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.

Among the 15 players who will return to Bowie to start the 2005 campaign are pitchers Hayden Penn, Scott Rice and Sendy Rleal. Penn was the Orioles fifth round draft pick in 2002, and is rated the Orioles' number two prospect by Baseball America. Along with Penn on the pitching staff will be former first round pick Scott Rice, the 44th overall selection by the Orioles in the 1999 draft. Rice was one of seven Baysox players who earned a spot on last year's Eastern League All-Star team. Rleal was 4-0 last season with a 2.66 ERA

Taking the field for the Baysox for a record sixth season will be outfielder Eugene Kingsale. The Bowie fan favorite is tenth all-time in games played with the Baysox with 237 and has a .268 career average with Bowie.

Under the leadership of new Manager Don Werner, the 24-man roster also features nine newcomers, including two top ten prospects, pitcher Chris Ray (eight) and infielder Tripper Johnson (nine) by Baseball America. Johnson spent all of last season with Single-A Frederick putting up a .269 average to go along with 21 homeruns and 74 RBI. Ray Split last season in Delmarva and Frederick going 8-6 with a 3.65 ERA.

Others making their debuts in the Orioles Organization are catcher Brandon Marsters, formerly of the Twins organization, outfielder Jeff Inglin (Marlins) and pitcher Melqui Torres (Mexican League).

The Baysox open their 2005 season this Thursday April 7th in Harrisburg. The home opener is on April 14th when the Akron Aeros come to Prince George's Stadium, game time set for 7:05.
