Inland Empire 66ers News Release
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The 66ers split their doubleheader at Arrowhead Credit Union Park against the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday, dropping the completion of Tuesday's game 8-6 before bouncing back in the second game with a 2-1 win on Jessie Mier's walk-off hit in the eighth inning.
With his entire family in the crowd following the draft of his younger brother Jiovanni to the Houston Astros in the first round of Tuesday's Major League Draft, Sixers catcher Jessie Mier proved to be the hero. Mier caught the second game, going 3-for-4 and driving in both of Inland Empire's runs including a home run down the left field line in the fourth inning off Lancaster starter Bryan Hallberg, his second career homer and first with the 66ers this season.
In the second game, mandated by league rules to go seven innings, 66ers starter Josh Wall went 6 scoreless innings, surrendering 5 hits and 2 walks while fanning 3, but didn't factor in the decision as the Sixers lost the lead.
Sixers reliever Jake McCarter (2-0) gave up his first run on the season on a two out double by J.B. Shuck in the seventh inning, but picked up the victory.
Tuesday's suspended game resumed in the third inning with Lancaster leading 3-1 at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The JetHawks offense was in prime form against the Inland Empire bullpen, scoring 5 runs on 9 hits in the remaining seven innings.
Two of the 66ers' 6 runs came on solo shots from Preston Mattingly (his 6th) and newly anointed All-Star Trayvon Robinson (his 8th).
Despite giving up all five of Inland Empire's runs scored in the second installment of game one, Lancaster starter Chad Wagler (2-1) picked up the win, going 4 innings, striking out 3 and giving up 10 hits and 1 walk.
Inland Empire (26-33) will look to win the three game series against Lancaster (20-39) Thursday night at 7:05 P.M. with Steven Johnson getting the call for the Sixers. It's Thirsty Thursday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park with $1 beers and $1 sodas.
