Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- The Quakes threatened in the bottom of the first inning against the Storm Tuesday night. After starter Jeremy McBryde walked the bases loaded with two outs, PJ Phillips failed to get a run across by striking out on three pitches.

Rancho had a chance in the 2nd inning as well as Carlos Colmenares singled to lead off the inning and stole second base with one out. Andrew Romine came up with two away and singled to left, but Colmenares was thrown out at home to retire the side.

Quakes starter Alexander Torres got off to a great start, retiring the Storm in order over the first four innings, while striking out three. In the 4th, Keoni Ruth led off with a single and Justin Baum followed with a single to put runners on first and second. With one out, Torres threw a wild pitch to advance the runners to second and third. Brad Chalk followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to put the Storm on the board first, 1-0.

With the Quakes trailing 1-0 going into the bottom of the 7th inning, PJ Phillips led off the frame with a double to get Rancho going. Carlos Colmenares came up and laid down a perfect base hit bunt and Storm pitcher Nick Vincent threw the ball down the right field line to allow Phillips to score, advance Colmenares to second and tie the game 1-1. After Alberto Rosario sacrificed Colmenares to third with one out, Clay Fuller struck out for the second out of the inning. Andrew Romine followed with a base hit bunt down the third base line to bring Colmenares home to take a 2-1 lead.

Eddie McKiernan threw a perfect 8th inning to get the ball to closer Ysmael Carmona for the 9th. It was a rocky outing for Carmona as he allowed back to back singles and a walk to start the inning. With the bases loaded and no outs, Keoni Ruth was hit by a pitch to force in the tying run. After a pop up and an out at home, the bases were still loaded with Brad Chalk at the plate and two outs. Chalk battled for 11 pitches before collecting an infield single to score Luis Rodriguez to take a 3-2 lead.

The Quakes got a lead off hit, a sacrifice bunt and a walk to put the tying run in scoring position against All-Star closer Bryan Oland. Andrew Romine then struck out and Hector Estrella popped out to end the game.

The Quakes will head to Lake Elsinore for game two of the series Wednesday with right hander Tim Kiely on the mound against All-Star left hander Cory Luebke of the Storm. Game time is scheduled for 6:05 PM.
