There is no match in the Mexican First Division season that brings out the emotion and passion of the "Clásico Nacional." Since the first meeting in 1943, América and Chivas have established themselves as the class of Mexican soccer with the Guadalajara club winning a record total of 11 league titles while América has raised ten titles in the professional era and four in the amateur era. In the most recent meeting between the two clubs, Chivas prevailed over América in an exciting 1-0 match on April 19, 2009 during the Torneo Clausura 2009 at its Estadio Jalisco in Guadalajara.
"We are pleased to be able to host one of the most historic annual soccer matches in the world in the 'Clásico Nacional'," Chiefs Chairman and one of MLS' founding owners, Clark Hunt said. "Chivas de Guadalajara and Club America represent two of the most passionate fan bases in the sport, and we are excited to bring the game to the New Arrowhead."
Chivas de Guadalajara is followed by thousands of fans and is recognized at the highest international level. In particular to the communities in the United States due to their Mexican heritage, the club's policy of fielding only Mexican-born players runs deep with Mexican pride. Chivas is coached by Francisco Ramirez and led by stalwart Ramon Morales, goalkeeper LuÃs Ernesto Michel, strikers Javier "Chicharito" Hernández and Omar Bravo, as well as the Mexican national defender, Jonny Magallón.
Club América was founded in 1916 and in 1959 was acquired by Mexican television giant and owner to this day, Televisa. América soon became a team to follow in all matters from opening a new stadium, the Azteca, to a bright 80's decade with five league titles, or hiring the best talent from Mexico and abroad with legends such as Carlos Reinoso, Zague, and Enrique Borja among others.
Currently América, coached by Jesus "Chucho" Ramirez, is respected worldwide for its national and international accomplishments, and for featuring top Mexican players such as current goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa and midfielder Pavel Pardo as well as top foreign talent such as Salvador Cabañas, a world-class striker from Paraguay.
The match, also known as "el Clásico de los Clásicos", was last played on U.S. soil on September 4, 2008 at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois where Chivas won 2-0 in front of a sellout crowd. The match will be the first for both teams in the Kansas City area.
The official sponsors of the Clasico Bud Light are Bud Light, Jose Cuervo and Boost Mobile.
