Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Port St. Lucie, FL) - Xavier Paul's 3rd-inning home run broke Mets starter Michael Devaney's 26-inning scoreless streak, but St. Lucie prevailed 10-2 Saturday night at Tradition Field. Josh Peterson scored three times for the Mets, who won their 7th straight while the Dodgers lost their 4th straight game. The series continues in St. Lucie at 5:00 PM Sunday. Devaney (8-3) entered with the league's second-best ERA at 1.52 and had not allowed a run in his previous four starts. The 23 year-old retired the first seven Dodgers before walking Ryder Mathias in the third. Then, with two outs, Paul lofted an opposite-field home run. It was his ninth of the season, tying him with Blake DeWitt for the team lead. The homer brought the Dodgers within 3-2 before the Mets pounced on Vero Beach mistakes to run away with it. Two Dodger errors in the 2nd inning led in part to the Mets first three runs. The fielding did not improve much behind Chris Malone who took the loss to fall to 2-5. The Mets answered immiedately following Paul's home run. Mike Carp singled with one out in the 3rd. Then Peterson hit what appeared to be a sure double play ball to third base. However, the wide throw was dropped at second and the inning continued. An out later Jamar Hill singled in both baserunners to put the Mets ahead 5-2. Poor fielding continued in the 4th. After Jose Coronado's one-out single, Corey Coles attempted a bunt down the third base line. Carlos Santana bare-handed the ball but threw wildly to first base. The bad throw brought in Coronado and when the Dodgers tried to throw him out at home, that ball went wild and Coles also scored. Malone continued to battle into the 7th before running into trouble. Jose Cruz led off with a double and went to third on a ground out. Peterson then grounded a ball to shortstop and with the infield drawn in, Adolfo Gonzalez threw home. However his throw was high which allowed Cruz to score and Peterson to reach first base. A wild pitch sent him to second and then Malone hit Jesus Flores. Zach Hammes relieved Malone and struck out his first batter. Then he uncorked a wild pitch and Alhaji drove in the final two runs for the Mets. The win puts St. Lucie at 7-1 in the 2nd Half and drops the Dodgers to 3-6.
