St. Lucie Mets News Release
PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (August 2, 2015) - The St. Lucie Mets jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 7-2 victory over the Clearwater Threshers on Sunday afternoon at Tradition Field.
It was the third consecutive win for the Mets and they took three of four in the series vs. the Threshers.
Knuckleballer Mickey Jannis befuddled the Threshers over seven shutout innings. He scattered four hits, walked two and struck out three while throwing 95 pitches. It was the second win in a row for Jannis.
The Mets scored all seven of their runs in the first two innings. Dominic Smith ripped a two-run single in the first and the Mets scored five runs with two outs in the second.
In the second, Jeff McNeil blasted a two-run double to put the Mets up 4-0. Matt Oberste followed with an RBI single. The Threshers intentionally walked Smith and paid the price when Victor Cruzado pulled a two-run triple down the right field line to make it 7-0.
All the damage was done against Threshers starter Victor Arano.
The Threshers snapped a 20.2 innings scoreless streak in the series with a two-out RBI single by Willians Astudillo in the eighth. The hit came against big league rehabber Erik Goeddel.
Goeddel surrendered three singles and one run while recording two outs in the eighth. He struck out one and threw 22 pitches.
Jimmy Duff pitched the final 1.1 innings in his Florida State League debut.
Cruzado went 3 for 4 with two RBI. Oberste and Yeixon Ruiz each had two hits for the Mets.
The Mets (54-52, 19-17) are off on Monday. They return to the diamond on Tuesday when they begin a three-game series at the Fort Myers Miracle.
