Miracle Shutout in Tortugas' Sweep of Doubleheader

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 2, 2015) - The Daytona Tortugas swept the Fort Myers Miracle with a pair of shutouts, 3-0 in game one and 1-0 in game two, on Sunday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

In game one, the Tortugas snagged an early lead with three runs in the first against Miracle starter Aaron Slegers. With one out, Junior Arias singled into left center. Slegers (8-6) then hit Alex Blandino with a 3-2 pitch. Sebastian Elizalde stepped up and lofted a ground rule double down the left field line to bring in Arias. After Slegers induced a ground out of Taylor Sparks to third, Chad Wallach ripped an 0-1 pitch down the third base line for a two-run double, 3-0.

The offense in the first inning by the Tortugas would be the only scoring of the game. Slegers kept Daytona off the board for the next five frames. Slegers ended the night credited with a complete game, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Daytona starter Nick Routt went six scoreless frames and gave up just two hits, a pair of doubles to Aderling Mejia. Rout (5-1) issued two walks and three strikeouts. Alejandro Chacin tossed the seventh without giving up a hit to earn his third save of the season.

In game two, the Miracle and Tortugas remained scoreless until of the bottom of the seventh. With Todd Van Steensel on the mound, Ronald Bueno doubled into the gap in right center. Wendell Soto then reached on a bunt single to put runners at first and third. Van Steensel (2-4) intentionally walked Phillip Ervin to load the bases. Arias then lined a 1-0 pitch into right field to send the Tortugas to a walk-off win, 1-0.

Miracle starter Ryan Eades went five scoreless in a no decision with two walks and three strikeouts. Corey Williams pitched a sixth inning without allowing a run.

Daytona starter Scott Brattvett and relievers Evan Mitchell and Carlos Gonzalez combined for a three-hit shutout. Gonzalez (1-1) recorded four punchouts in two innings to get the win.

The Miracle (59-49, 21-17) have an off-day on Monday, but return to Hammond Stadium on Tuesday, August 4 for a 2-for-1 Tuesday match-up with the St. Lucie Mets at 7:05 p.m. Fans can take advantage of buy one, get one tickets, hot dogs and domestic draft beers.
