Tampa Yankees News Release

TAMPA - The Tampa Yankees (17-20, 51-56) and Bradenton Marauders (23-13, 55-51-1) ended their season-series tied at 4-4 after splitting the final two games on Sunday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa tallied 12 hits in a 5-2 win in game one before Bradenton roared back with a 10-5 win in the later game.

Following a two hour and 54 minute rain delay, the T-Yanks and Marauders began the twin-bill.

Bradenton took an early lead when Justin Maffei smacked a leadoff home run in the first. Jin-De Jhang doubled to begin the second and scored on a single by Michael Fransoso, giving the Marauders a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees responded with a four-run second, tallying six hits off RHP Luis Heredia. Kyle Higashioka and Ericson Leonora each singled and Angelo Gumbs lined an RBI hit to left. Tyler Wade followed with a sacrifice fly. After an infield hit by Abiatal Avelino, two more runs scored on a single by Dustin Fowler, giving Tampa a 4-2 lead.

RHP Rookie Davis (6-6) held the Marauders to two runs on four hits in five innings of work, walking one and striking out three.

Tampa added a run in the fourth when Avelino hit an infield single and later scored on a double by Mike Ford.

Heredia (4-5) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk in two innings, striking out none.

RHP Taylor Garrison worked around a pair of singles and tallied two strikeouts in two scoreless relief innings, earning the save. It was Garrison's first game with Tampa since August 28th, 2014.

In the later game, the Yankees struck first with a pair of runs in the second. Ford and Miguel Andujar singled and Jake Skole walked, loading the bases with no outs. Michael O'Neill hit a sacrifice fly into right and Wes Wilson pulled an RBI single into right, giving Tampa a 2-0 lead.

Maffei led off the third with a triple against starter Jonathan Holder. Bradenton got on the board with an RBI single by Jeff Roy.

Tampa doubled its run total in the third. Avelino reached on a bunt single and Fowler walked. A single by Dante Bichette Jr. loaded the bases before Ford hit an RBI single. One out later, Jake Skole hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

RHP Geoff DeGroot (1-1) relieved Holder with one out and a runner at first in the fourth. That runner later scored on a wild pitch, making it a 4-2 game.

Holder settled for a no-decision in his first start back from the disabled list. The right-hander allowed two runs on six hits in three and a third innings, walking one while striking out a pair.

Bradenton scored at least one run in each of the rest of the innings, scoring nine unanswered runs.

Jordan Steranka drove in a man from second with one out in the fifth. A walk and a wild pitch placed runners at second and third. Both later scored on a fielding error at first base by Angelo Gumbs.

Roy hit a two-out, RBI ground-rule double against RHP Luis Niebla for a run in the sixth by the Marauders.

Hobie Harris made his Tampa Yankees debut in the seventh and Bradenton rudely greeted the right-hander. The Marauders loaded the bases and Junior Sosa hit a three-run double. Trace Tim Song followed with an RBI double, giving Bradenton a 10-4 lead.

Avelino led off the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run. That'd be the only run Tampa got off RHP Montana DuRapau, who earned his sixth save after two innings of work.

RHP Junior Lopez (3-0) earned the win in relief for Bradenton, tossing two and a third scoreless frames. Lopez yielded a hit, a walk and struck out two.

Ford (4-for-6, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB) reached base six times in the double-header. Avelino (5-for-8, HR, RBI, 2 SB, 4 R) hit his fourth homer of the year. Fowler went 3-for-7 with a double, a walk, two RBI and a run scored.

Following a day off on Monday, the Tampa Yankees travel to Brevard County to begin a three-game series with the Manatees. RHP Gabriel Encinas (2-4, 3.98 ERA) is scheduled to start for Tampa. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
