St. Lucie Mets News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The St. Lucie Mets and Fort Myers Miracle split their doubleheader at Hammond Stadium on Tuesday after a one hour and 35 minute delayed start due to rain.
The Mets rallied late to win the first game 7-4, while the Miracle stunned the Mets with a walk-off 3-2 win in extra innings in game 2.
In game 1, the Mets entered the sixth inning trailing 4-3 but scored three runs in the frame to take the lead. Blake Tiberi grounded a ball to second baseman Michael Davis, who threw it wild to the plate trying to get Carlos Cortes as the tying run. Cortes scored and Jeremy Vasquez also came home on the play to give the Mets a 5-4 lead.
Manny Rodriguez added a RBI double later in the sixth inning and Wagner Lagrange popped a solo home run in the seventh inning for a 7-4 lead.
Jaison Vilera got the win. He held the Miracle to two earned runs in five innings.
Carlos Hernandez pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts to end the game. He earned his first save of the season.
Lagrange and Rodriguez had two hits apiece.
In game 2, the Miracle trailed the Mets 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. Yeltsin Encarnacion tied the game with a single, then Gabriel Maciel hit a game-winning single off of Mets reliever Marcel Renteria.
The Mets briefly took a 2-1 lead in the top of the ninth on a two-out RBI single by Vasquez, but they could not hold the lead and get the doubleheader sweep.
Jacob Zanon went 3 for 4 in the loss.
Mets starter Thomas Szapucki limited the Miracle to two hits and one run in five innings.
The doubleheader split, coupled with the Charlotte Stone Crabs extending their winning streak to eight games on Tuesday, bumped the Mets 4.0 games behind the Crabs for first place in the FSL South Division. It's the furthest the Mets have been out of first place since July 21. Last Tuesday the Mets were within 1.0 games of Charlotte.
The Mets (35-18, 67-53) and Miracle (27-26, 66-53) are back to a single nine-inning game on Wednesday. First pitch from Hammond Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
