JUPITER, Fla. - The Jupiter Hammerheads clipped the St. Lucie Mets 2-1 in the series finale at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Hammerheads broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the eighth. Osiris Johnson and Cristhian Rodriguez worked consecutive walks from Mets reliever Joshua Cornielly with one out. Cameron Barstadt followed with a chopping infield single that was fielded by shortstop Shervyen Newton, who threw errantly into the Mets dugout, allowing Johnson to come home for the go-ahead run.
Tyler Eckberg closed out the game in the bottom of the ninth with a pair of strikeouts, stranding the tying run at first base.
After six scoreless innings to start the game, Jupiter broke through in the bottom of the seventh when Khalil Watson lifted a sac fly for a 1-0 lead.
The Mets answered in the top of the eighth when Omar De Los Santos led off with a triple and Newton hit his league-leading eighth double to bring home De Los Santos to make it 1-1.
Dominic Hamel served as the opener for the Mets, pitching a scoreless first inning. Carson Seymour proceeded to shutout the Hammerheads over the next four innings.
Jupiter starter Sandro Bargallo held the Mets off the board for 4.2 innings.
De Los Santos, Stanley Consuegra and Raul Beracierta had two hits apiece for the Mets.
The Mets (9-6) are off on Monday. They return to the diamond on Tuesday to start a six-game home series vs. the Daytona Tortugas at Clover Park. First pitch on Tuesday is 6:10 p.m.
