MetroStars sign 2004 MLS MVP Amado Guevara to a new contract

Secaucus, NJ (Monday, March 21, 2005) - The MetroStars announced today that they have signed 2004 Major League Soccer MVP Amado Guevara to a new contract. Per Major League Soccer policy terms of the deal are not disclosed.

We are delighted to be able to reward Amado for his incredible achievements with the club over the past two years, said MetroStars President and General Manager Nick Sakiewicz. The best part about Amado is his desire to win. Though he has won a lot of individual awards over the past two years, we know that he is hungry for a championship and he is the type of player that can take this team to its first MLS Cup.

Signed in April of 2003, Guevara has been named the MetroStars MVP in both of his seasons with the club. During his first campaign with the team Guevara played in 25 games, and tallied three goals and 10 assists. His 10 assists ranked him third in the league behind Kansas Citys Preki (17) and MetroStars teammate Mark Lisi (11). Four of his assists for the Red and Black were game-winners putting him at the top of that category. All of his accomplishments that season were recognized when he was voted the 2003 MetroStars MVP.

In 2004, Guevaras play rose to a level that made him the 2004 MLS MVP, the 2004 MetroStars MVP, the 2004 MLS All-Star Game MVP, a member of the 2004 MLS Best XI, the 2004 MLS Scoring Champion (tied with New Englands Pat Noonan) and Fox Sports Espanols MLS Player of the Year. He scored a team high (tied with John Wolyniec) 10 goals and registered a team high 10 assists.
