MetroStars Select Marvell Wynne First Overall in 2006 MLS SuperDraft

January 20, 2006 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release

PHILADELPHIA, PA (Friday, January 20, 2006) - Generation adidas and UCLA defender Marvell Wynne was selected by the MetroStars with the first overall selection in Friday's MLS SuperDraft, held at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The MetroStars acquired the No. 1 pick from Chivas USA at the start of the SuperDraft in exchange for the fifth overall selection and defender Jason Hernandez. Wynne's father, Marvell, played baseball for San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Generation adidas, which was established ahead of the 2005 MLS season, is Major League Soccer's youth player development program designed to identify and nurture the elite youth soccer talent in the United States. In addition to training and playing on a weekly basis with one of Major League Soccer's 12 professional clubs, Generation adidas players also receive educational grants to further their college education. Teams selected all 11 Generation adidas players in this year's draft among the first 23 picks, and six of them in the first round.

Twenty-nine colleges were represented among the 48 players selected, including four players from NCAA College Cup Champions Maryland. Real Salt Lake selected Santa Clara University midfielder and former Morocco U-17 player Mehdi Ballouchy with the second overall pick and the Columbus Crew chose 2005 MAC Hermann Trophy winner from Maryland Jason Garey at number three.

Two players were selected by teams where their older brothers already play. With the 13th overall pick, the Chicago Fire picked Georgetown defender Jeff Curtin, uniting him with his brother Jim Curtin, a 2004 MLS All-Star. D.C. United selected St. John's midfielder Jeff Carroll with the 39th overall pick, joining him with older brother Brian Carroll.

Biographies on all players selected are available at MLSnet.com. On Thursday, Jan. 26, teams will select more players a supplemental draft to be held via private conference call (2 p.m. ET) among the teams.

All 12 MLS teams begin pre-season training in the coming weeks, beginning with the New England Revolution and Los Angeles Galaxy, who will compete in the CONCACAF Champions Cup. The 2006 MLS season kicks off on April 1, 2006 with a full slate of matches.
