MetroStars Lose to Baltimore
January 20, 2019 - Major Arena Soccer League (MASL)
Mississauga MetroStars News Release
The Mississauga MetroStars started the first of four straight games on the road in outstanding fashion, with Marco Rodriguez scoring twice within the first 3:15 of the first quarter, but the hometown Baltimore Blast settled down and netted 11 unanswered goals on their way to a comfortable 14-6 victory over the visiting MetroStars in an MASL Eastern Division match Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena at Towson University in Baltimore.
? ?The MetroStars travelled to Baltimore a day early to avoid a winter storm making its way across the US Northeast so the Mississauga squad was in attendance Saturday night to watch the Blast earn a hard fought 6-5 win over Harrisburg Saturday night. Even without top scorer Dwayne De Rosario, who did not make the trip due to injury, the MetroStars were hoping to catch a tired Blast team in their second game of a quick back to back. And the visitors started brightly when Rodriguez netted from a free kick after just 41 seconds, then doubled the lead after taking a pass from Damion Graham.
? ?But Mike Deasel and Jonathan Melo struck for the Blast just over three minutes apart to earn a 2-2 tie at the end of the first quarter. Baltimore added three more goals in the second quarter before Vini Dantas netted two goals to extend the Blast lead to 7-2 by halftime.
? ?Just 55 seconds into the third quarter, Dantas completed the natural hattrick firing in a free kick from the yellow line. But the Blast didn't stop there as they added three more goals to make it 11-2 and force MetroStars coach Phil Ionadi to make a goalkeeping change, replacing starter Sebastian Zeballos with Adrian Becic.
? ?That change seemed to spark some life in the visitors as Rodriguez scored his third of the game after a nice give and go with Graham while the teams were playing 4-on-4. Sam Guernsey however would restore the 9-goal edge for Baltimore with a tally just 43 seconds from the end of the third quarter.
? ?Jereme Raley would extend the Blast lead even further early in the fourth quarter before the MetroStars rallied for three straight goals including a pair from Mo Babouli but the Blast's Jamie Thomas recorded the final goal of the match with a long range empty netter while Mississauga employed a sixth attacker.
? ?The MetroStars will return to action Saturday, January 26 at Milwaukee against the Wave. Their next home game is Friday, February 15th when they host the Blast at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre with kickoff set for 7:35pm (ET).
