Utica's Comeback Effort Falls Short in Kansas City

Kansas City, MO. - Ben Ramin tallied a hat trick but it wouldn't be enough as Utica City fell 9-6 to the Kansas City Comets Sunday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. Joey Tavernese scored a pair of goals and Bo Jelovac chipped in a goal as well. Andrew Coughlin finshed with 16 saves in the loss.

James Togbah scored the first goal of the night, deflecting a shot off of a Utica defender. Utica had a number of chances to tie the game up but was unable to capitalize and trailed 1-0 after the first quarter.

Tavernese tied things up with a top-corner strike four minutes into the second quarter. Lucas Rodriguez put Kansas City back on top at the 8:13 mark of the second quarter. Kansas City continued pressing but Coughlin made several key stops to keep the score 2-1 heading into halftime.

Kiel Williams scored 22 seconds into the third quarter to bring the score to 3-1. Williams added his second of the game three minutes later. Adam James made it 5-1 with 3:17 to go in the third quarter. Togbah earned his second of the night with a power play goal a minute and a half later. Ramin ended the scoring run with a minute to go in the quarter.

Ramin struck again early in the fourth to cut the deficit in half. Bryan Perez and Leo Gibson scored late midway through the fourth to make it 8-3. Jelovac and Ramin would respond to cut the lead down to three. Tavernese tipped a shot from Slav Ubiparipovic to bring City back within two, but an empty net goal from Togbah would seal the win for Kansas City.

The Utica City FC team will return home to train this week before heading to Harrisburg on Friday night for a match with the Heat. Home action returns to the Adirondack Bank Center on Sunday afternoon against the Orlando SeaWolves. Tickets can be purchased at www.empirestatetix.com.
