Metcalf powers Hawks by 'Birds

Memphis, Tenn. - Oklahoma used a pair of big innings to beat Memphis 10-7 on Sunday night in front of the largest crowd in Memphis professional baseball history with 18,620 fans.

Trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning Travis Metcalf belted a grand slam to put the RedHawks on top. Brendan Ryan's solo homer in the fifth inning brought the Redbirds within a run and Jarrett Hoffpauir's sacrifice fly tied the game in the bottom of the eighth. Metcalf, however, struck again in the top of the ninth inning with a three-run homer as part of a six-run Oklahoma rally. Metcalf finished the night with seven RBI and a pair of homers. Ryan led the 'Birds with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. David Freese hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth for Memphis in the loss.

Joselo Diaz picked up the win for Oklahoma despite giving up the lead and walking four batters in his one inning of work. Kelvin Jimenez took the loss for Memphis giving up six runs, one earned, on six hits over 1.2 innings. RedHawks starter Doug Mathis allowed two runs on three hits in three innings. Memphis starter P.J. Walters walked a season-high six batters and fanned eight over 4.2 innings giving up four runs on four hits.

The Redbirds wrap up their season tomorrow afternoon with first pitch slated for 1:05 p.m. Mitchell Boggs will be on the hill for the 'Birds against Oklahoma lefty Michael Ballard.
