Portland Lumberjax News Release

PORTLAND, January 14, 2009 - For the second consecutive week a player from the Portland LumberJax has been named the National Lacrosse League's Transition Player of the Week. Week one was forward Scott Stewart. Today the league announced that defenseman Brodie Merrill has won the award after scoring two goals, adding four assists and collecting 33 loose balls as Portland went 1-1 during the second week of the season.

Last Friday, as the Jax fell 12-10 to the Colorado Mammoth at the Rose Garden Arena, Merrill scored his first goal of the season, added two assists and collected 14 loose balls.

One night later, Merrill scored one goal, added two assists and collected a season-high 19 loose balls in a 14-5 deconstruction of the Mammoth at the Pepsi Center. Merrill, along with the rest of the back line, set a physical tone early in the game that led to Portland's most lopsided win in franchise history.

"Brodie impacts the game more than any player in the league," said Head Coach/General Manager Derek Keenan. "On the weekend he played tough, hard nosed defense, dominated the turf and moved the ball with ease in transition. That's pretty much a typical weekend for Brodie."

On the season the three-time All-Star has scored two goals, added five assists and collected a NLL leading 48 loose balls for the 1-2 LumberJax.

This is the third time in Merrill's career he's been named the Transition Player of the Week.

The Jax travel to Edmonton on Friday, January 16th to meet the Rush (0-1) at 6:30 p.m. at Rexall Place. All NLL games will be streamed FREE this season as part of the NLL Network. To access the broadcast, go to NLL.com.
