Phoenix Mercury News Release
Phoenix, Ariz. - The Phoenix Mercury announced today that they will host a WNBA Draft Party on Saturday, April 17 at the Hard Rock Café (2nd Street and Jefferson) beginning at 8:30 a.m. Fans are invited to join Kayte Christensen, Adrian Williams, Mercury coaches and owners, Hip Hop Squad members and Scorch as the Mercury prepare to select first in the 2004 WNBA Draft. This marks the first time an Arizona professional sports franchise has ever held a #1 draft pick.
"This is a great opportunity for our fans to join our players and our coaching staff and celebrate the historical nature of this draft pick," said Mercury General Manager Seth Sulka. "As we enter our eighth season, our fans have been vital to our success and we feel it is very important that they are included as we write yet another page in Mercury history."
Beginning at 8:30 a.m. fans will be treated to an All-Star breakfast buffet prior to the 9:00 a.m. draft announcement. Following the Mercury's selection, fans will be treated to a champagne toast and will have the opportunity to sign a large "Welcome to Phoenix" greeting card for the Mercury's newest star.
The 2004 WNBA Draft has been heralded as one of the deepest college drafts in the history of women's basketball. The Mercury hold three of the top 15 draft picks, selecting first, eighth and 14th overall. The club holds the 27th pick overall as well.
The WNBA Draft will begin at 9:00 a.m. Phoenix time with the first round broadcast live on ESPN. Rounds two and three will be carried live on NBATV. Locally, ESPN 860 AM will broadcast from Hard Rock Café on Draft Day and will have all of the behind-the-scenes action on the Mercury as they make their draft-day decisions.
On Wednesday, December 3 the Phoenix Mercury won the WNBA Draft Lottery, thus earning the #1 pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft. In 2003, the Mercury finished with an 8-26 record with the best odds for winning the draft lottery.
