Frisco RoughRiders News Release
FRISCO, TEXAS (AUGUST 20, 2012)- The Frisco RoughRiders are proud to announce that third baseman Tommy Mendonca (pronounced men-DOAN-sah) has been named the Texas League's "Player of the Week" and starting pitcher Nick Tepesch has been named "Pitcher of the Week" for the week of August 13-19. Tepesch and Mendonca become the first players from the same team to win both awards in a given week this season, while it marks the first time a pair of RoughRiders have won both awards since 2009, when Chad Tracy (Player of the Week) and Kasey Kiker (Pitcher of the Week) accomplished the feat for the week of July 6-13. Mendonca becomes the third RoughRiders player this season to win "Player of the Week" joining Engel Beltre (twice) and Mike Olt. Tepesch is the first 'Riders pitcher to win "Pitcher of the Week" this season.
Mendonca, 24, batted .533 (8 for 15) last week with two home runs, one double, six RBI and four runs scored. His .533 batting average over the last week was second highest among all Double-A players. The Turlock, California native capped off his week with a fine Sunday, going 2 for 3 with a pair of home runs against Northwest Arkansas in the first game of a doubleheader. Since joining Frisco from Triple-A Round Rock on Aug 2, Mendonca is batting .315 (17 for 54) over 15 games with four home runs, two doubles, 12 RBI and seven runs scored. It marks the second time that Mendonca has won "Player of the Week" in the Texas League, having claimed the award in 2011 for the week of June 13-20.
Tepesch, 23, went 1-0 in one start against Tulsa on Friday. In the game Tepesch tossed seven shutout innings and yielded only two hits to pick up his sixth Texas League win. He struck out five over 78 pitches, and has picked up wins in four straight decisions. A native of Blue Springs, Missouri, Tepesch joined the RoughRiders on June 15 from High-A Myrtle Beach. In 13 Double-A outings (11 starts) he is 6-2 with a 3.57 ERA over 75.2 innings.
The 'Riders conclude their series against Northwest Arkansas tonight at 7:05 from Dr Pepper Ballpark before beginning a seven-game road trip against San Antonio and Midland. For ticket information, please call (972) 731-9200 or visit www.ridersbaseball.com.
