Memphis Return to AutoZone Park to Face Atlanta United 2
June 15, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Memphis 901 FC News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis 901 FC will play a match at AutoZone Park for the first time this season as the club concluded a five-match road trip to being the 2021 campaign on Saturday. After dropping Saturday's contest to Louisville City FC by a final tally of 3-0, 901 FC look to rebound as Memphis has three home matches over the next 11 days.
While chances were had and possessions were exchanged during the duration of the first half, Louisville City was able to take control in the second half thanks in part to a personnel advantage due to a Skylar Thomas red card in the 57'. Following the Memphis ejection, Louisville scored just a minute later before converting a penalty in the 68' and finally scoring once more in the 70'.
Focus shifts to Atlanta United 2 as Memphis 901 FC is set to resume play at AutoZone Park for the first time since a 3-1 win over Birmingham Legion FC on October 3, 2020. The match on Wednesday marks the first of a three-match homestand with the latter two matches coming against OKC Energy FC on Saturday, June 19 and Sporting Kansas City II on Saturday, June 26.
Atlanta United 2 finds itself sitting a spot behind Central Division leader Birmingham Legion FC as the club holds 12 points early on in the season. After a draw with Memphis in Kennesaw, Ga. on May 23, Atlanta has had a trio of different results in as many matches. After falling to Birmingham at home, Atlanta United 2 claimed a compelling victory in Kentucky against Louisville City FC before securing a late draw against Sporting Kansas City II a week ago.
Atlanta's Aiden McFadden has continued his solid run of form as the 22-year-old winger has picked up five goals this season including a brace against Memphis on May 23. McFadden is tied for fourth in the league scoring ranks as his side finds itself in the same position with 13 total goals on the year. Atlanta United 2 is also tied for second in the league with three clean sheets as the MLS-affiliate club rotates a trio of keepers in Alec Kann, Rocco Rios Novo and Vicente Reyes.
While Atlanta operates a quick and efficient offense-leading the league in total passes and sitting at third in the league with a 22% conversion rate, the club also ranks second in the league with 122 fouls conceded. On the other hand, Memphis has been solid at forcing fouls this year and has played relatively smart soccer, conceding just 64 fouls so far.
While the all-time series record sits at 1-1-2, the two sides last met on May 23 in a match that resulted in a 2-2 draw after a McFadden goal in stoppage time. While the first meeting between the clubs came in Memphis' inaugural season and saw Atlanta United 2 leave Memphis with a 1-0 victory in April 2019, the following two matches favored Memphis 901 FC. In their next meeting, a 1-0 Atlanta lead was wiped away courtesy of a late Adam Najem brace in August 2019. In their most recent matchup, a back-and-forth affair saw Cal Jennings equalize in stoppage time to salvage a draw in July 2020.
After Saturday's match, Memphis will still have a home and away match to face Atlanta as the next meeting between the two will come on July 3 in Kennesaw before a final match in Memphis on October 16. Saturday's match is scheduled to kickoff at 7:30 p.m. CT and can be seen on ESPN+. Ticket information can be found here.
