Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis 901 FC won its second match of the season, beating the Oakland Roots 2-1 on Saturday night.
"The boys put it on the line, it was incredible. They put in a 90-minute shift and held down for the three points. They worked their tails off, they earned it."
Memphis goalkeeper Trey Muse saved a dangerous ball as Karlsson received the ball in the box taking a shot in front of the goal, keeping the score tied 0-0 in the sixth minute.
Memphis forward Derek Dodson received a yellow in minute 11 after charging the Oakland goalkeeper Bailey. A minute later Dodson set up Memphis with a free-kick just outside the 18-yard box. Aaron Molloy scored the team's first goal of the season, hitting a shot to the upper 90 in the 13 minute to put Memphis up 1-0.
"I think I can help on set pieces, it's one of those that I really fancied and thanks to the guys I'm happy it went in."
Dodson had another chance for Memphis, narrowly missing the goal to put Memphis another goal ahead. Oakland and Memphis exchanged possession throughout the first half creating opportunities.
Molloy attempted to record his second goal of the night as he took a shot from 35 yards out that sailed right over the crossbar of the goal in the 27 minute. After Phillip Goodrum's goal was called offsides he received a yellow card in the 35 minute.
Memphis doubled its lead as Dodson chipped the ball over the defense with Patrick Seagrist getting a head on the ball to put it in the back of the net in the 42 minute.
The Roots recorded their yellow card of the match as Fissore tackled Dodson from behind on a break in the 54 minute.
Memphis got out on a fast break as Goodrum and Laurent Kissiedou went two-on-one with an Oakland defender. Goodrum took the shot, hitting the far post, deflecting the ball back into the field in the 61 minute.
Barbir added to the Roots yellow card tally in the 66 minute after pushing Jeremy Kelly after a dead ball call.
Oakland picked up the pace, looking to overcome the two-goal deficit, scored as a 50/50 ball got caught at the feet of Formella in the box and was pushed into the goal in the 82 minute.
With urgency high on both sides Memphis defends its goal with the Oakland defense continuously pushing its offense into the attacking third. Chris Allan adds the third yellow for Memphis in stoppage time.
Memphis held on to its lead playing a firm defense in the latter part of the second half.
