Memphis 901 FC News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - Memphis 901 FC added another win to its preseason schedule Saturday in a dominant 4-1 exhibition triumph over Christian Brothers University at the Bucs' Signaigo Field.
It was a heavily contested first half as both teams created multiple chances on goal. As the minutes neared halftime, 901 FC forward Heviel Cordovés sent home the first goal of the match off an assist by defender Triston Hodge.
Memphis 901 FC entered halftime with a slim 1-0 lead but the scoring chances opened up in the second half of Saturday's friendly.
Junior Sandoval would head in a corner kick from Louis Bennett II to put 901 FC up 2-0. A few minutes later, Morgan Hackworth joined in on the scoring action to make it 3-0 as the match wound down.
The Bucs would get on the scoresheet off a free kick but 901 FC countered with its final goal coming from Justin Dhillon. The win kept 901 FC perfect in the preseason ahead of a road exhibition Wednesday at Vanderbilt University against back-to-back USL Championship champion Louisville City FC.
Although Saturday was a win on the pitch for 901 FC, it was also a massive win off it for everyone involved.
The club partnered with Christian Brothers University to help raise funds for St. Jude on behalf of Anna Della Rosa, who both teams consider a close member of the family.
Della Rosa, who has been a part of 901 FC since its infancy, was recently diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Half of Saturday's proceeds went directly to St. Jude thanks to her efforts.
Although Della Rosa could not make it to the match, 901 FC head coach Tim Mulqueen had a message for her.
"We love you," Mulqueen said Saturday. "This was for you and we look forward to you getting healthy and getting out with us as soon as you can."
Memphis 901 FC's inaugural USL Championship season kicks off at AutoZone Park on Saturday, March 9 at 6:00 p.m. against the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Single match tickets for home matches in March and April will go on sale Wednesday, February 20 at 9:01 a.m.
