Memphis 901 FC News Release
Memphis, Tenn. - Memphis 901 FC used a last-minute goal in extra time from Jeremy Kelly win over One Knoxville SC in the second round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday night at Regal Soccer Stadium.
The club notched their first victory in the longest running soccer competition on American soil since 2019 as the ball fell to Kelly's feet on the final set piece of the match only for the midfielder to put it past the keeper.
The Beale St. Boys struck first after numerous chances in the first half when Aaron Molloy fired a cross into the box to find Dylan Borczak, who put a header past the keeper and give Memphis the lead in the 38th minute.
Knoxville would equalize in the 65th minute, however, with a converted penalty kick from Ilija Illic sparking a highly contested second half with both teams pressuring the opposing defenses.
The match would go to extra time with no team producing a goal in regulation, and while both clubs had chances in the extra period, it would be Jeremy Kelly delivering the decisive score at the death to put Memphis past Knoxville.
Memphis 901 FC advances to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup with time, date and opponent to be announced at a later date.
Memphis 901 FC have an off weekend before hosting Las Vegas Lights FC on Saturday, April 15 at 7 p.m. CT. Fans can get tickets to the next three home matches all for just $21 with the Bill Hamid Ticket Package.
