Rio Grande Valley FC Switch Gears to Take on Midweek US Open Cup Challenge
April 4, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Rio Grande Valley FC Toros News Release
EDINBURG, Texas - Rio Grande Valley FC prepares to make its first appearance in the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup as they take on USL League One side South Georgia Tormenta FC on Wednesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. CST at Optim Health System Field. The match will be live via Youtube. This is the first all-time meeting between the sides in any competition.
This is the second ever Open Cup appearance historically for RGV FC; the side reached the Third Round after defeating USL League One side North Carolina FC in the second round and then ultimately being eliminated by Major League Soccer side, Houston Dynamo FC.
RGV FC: The Toros are coming off a successful first road game of the regular season where they claimed a convincing 1-0 victory against a Detroit City FC side who battled well for the full 90-minutes.
Taylor Davila stayed hot offensively as he notched the winning goal in the contest and locked in a USL Championship Team of the Week - 4 top eleven spot. He has now scored in back-to-back matches and has become a viable threat up front for opposing back lines.
The midweek mix of action for RGV FC should bring an interesting lineup on match day, considering the tournament and the much-needed rest time for some of the roster; do not be surprised by young players earning playing time as well as some position swings in case Wilmer Cabrera needs to get creative against a strong, athletic South Georgia Tormenta FC side.
South Georgia Tormenta FC: The home side are the current USL League One title holders and look to make another good run in the U.S Open Cup after reaching the Round of 32 in the 2022 edition of the historic tournament.
Tormenta FC are no strangers to finding success against USL Championship sides; the side eliminated Charleston Battery and Birmingham Legion FC en route to their historic run in 2022.
RGV FC must play ball well and avoid allowing slip ups against the athletic attacking third for the South Georgia Tormenta FC game plan. Benefitting from home field advantage, they must limit the possession and distribution form the Toros to avoid a long night in case the visitors decide to open the floodgates offensively.
