Memphis 901 FC News Release
Louisville, Ky. - Memphis 901 FC (1-2-2) dropped a difficult 3-0 contest to Louisville City FC (3-2-1) In a match that saw the visitors reduced to ten men for much of the evening. After Skylar Thomas was sent off in the 57', Louisville was able to connect soon thereafter with a goal in the 58'. After that, the home side was able to convert a penalty in the 68' and finally score once more in the 70'.
The match opened with back-and-forth sequences that saw the two sides exchange chances throughout the first half of action. Despite an early yellow card to Mark Segbers and Louisville's Brian Ownby, there was little between the two sides in the opening 45 minutes.
Things swung the way of Lou City in the second half, however, as Skyler Thomas picked up a yellow card in the 50' before seeing straight red in the 57'. It took just one minute for Louisville's Wesley Charpie to cash in on the personnel advantage as the defender finished home an errant ball in the box in the 58'. Not long after, Brecc Evans was called for a foul in the box leading to a Lancaster penalty conversion in the 68'. Finally, Louisville City scored once more in the 70' via Brian Ownby.
"I think the score line's obviously flattering for Louisville, but at the day, they were the better team and deserve three points," Head Coach Ben Pirmann said after the match. "We're ready to go for Wednesday night at home. That's the only message on the table right now; we need to reward our fans, we need to reward our community. I think this club is a special club and I think our guys are ready to put that into play so we'll regroup."
Despite a tough outing, goalkeeper John Berner recorded five saves on the night tying him for the second-most saves in club history with Jimmy Hague's 25 from a season ago. Mark Segbers had a solid night as the defender earned Buff City Soap Man of the Match honors by leading the team in total passes, touches, fouls won and possessions gained.
Next up, 901 FC will head home for the first time this year as it welcomes Atlanta United 2 to AutoZone Park on Wednesday, June 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT and can be seen on CW30 - WLMT Memphis and ESPN+. For information on tickets, please click here.
