Houston Dynamo FC News Release
Houston Dynamo head coach Wilmer Cabrera
(on the excitement that FW Alberth Elis and Romell Quioto have brought) "They've been important for us, there's no doubt about it. One has one goal and one assist; the other has three goals. That's important for any team at this point. We dropped the level, all of us, including them during the second half (of recent games). That's something that we need to improve, we need to work on. We have recognized that the team has dropped the level in the second half. Now it's our task to continue that intensity and concentration during the second half in every game."
(on what has led to dropping the level of play during the second half) "A little bit of everything. A little bit of the other team is going to push because they are losing. If you notice every game that we played, the three games we have played, we are winning at halftime. So, there is no doubt the other team is going to come to try to get something. We haven't been able to find the ball; we haven't been able to control and to continue with the intensity that we normally play with in the first half. It's our fault; it's our responsibility; we cannot make excuses about anything. Against Portland, we lost all the control of the game and it was our fault. The good thing is we have identified the problem and now we need to work on that. The players, the coaches, we all have identified what is coming, what is happening. Now we have two weeks to work on it."
(on whether two weeks is enough time to fix the mistakes from the past games) "Definitely. The two weeks are going to help us. Also, you have to count that we have five players out (for international duty this week) and four of those have been starters for the team. We have to adjust, we have to work, but we have to be prepare. When they come back, they are going to see a stronger team and they will have to be able to adapt quick."
(on what he will be watching for during the World Cup Qualifiers) "It's more about them mentally. That's a very tough game for everyone; we have five of them. So, those five guys if they play the two games they are going to be more exhausted, tired and loaded with work and adrenaline that the rest of the guys. We will need to balance that, we need to help them."
(on any changes to the team after the World Cup Qualifiers) "We need to see if they play first. If they play the whole games, the weather conditions, the type of the game conditions, everything counts. Then, when they come over here they cannot practice, they have to rest. It's an adjustment that we need to face. We have five players (participating); the teams that don't have five players, they don't have that problem but we have that and we have to deal with it."
Houston Dynamo MF Alex
(on what the team was missing during the second half at Portland) "In the first half we played well, we went to halftime with a favorable score, 2-1. During the second half, we came out with another mentality, another intensity and what happened, happened. We lost the three points; at least a tie would have been good in Portland."
(on how the team played away from home) "The team seemed good during the first half. In the second half, we lacked intensity, just like against Seattle and against Columbus. During the second half, we have been lowering our intensity and this time it wasn't different. We conceded some goals. Now we have two weeks to work on it."
Houston Dynamo FW Andrew Wenger
(on what changed against Portland during the second half) "Maybe the argument that can be made is that we haven't played great in any of the second halves so far this year; we have given up a goal in each of the halves. That's now our points of emphasis, we've been able to recognize. Granted, as much as you hate to lose a game, it's great to realize that early on the year (rather) than later. So, that's just the point overall to figure out - just some little fixes on the field, mentality, and just organization that we can do."
(on why this season will be different from last season) "Optimism. I mean, it's still early. We were excited last year and we are excited now, (but) it's standing on our toes and being prepared for when the downturns come and figuring them out quickly. We have a very good team; I thought we had a very good team last year, but we clearly didn't play to the point where we proved that. So, it's on us week-in and week-out to prove that we are a very good team. Nothing really changes, in my opinion."
