Fraser, MI â The Motor City Mechanics recorded a franchise record 58 shots on goal. Both Rick Smith and Joe Burton tallied two goals on the night and rookie netminder Zach Sikich made his first professional start and earned his first win.
Smith put the Mechanics on the board late in the first period on a power play strike. Bryan Smolinski lit the lamp shorthanded 1:13 into the second frame, drawing an assist from rookie newcomer Jared Ross. Smith tallied his second of the night at the 12:39 mark of the second period to give the Mechanics a 3-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Burton found the back of the net for the 4-0 advantage. Derek Campbell and Jason Sessa each scored for the Jackals before Burton scored his second of the night with just thirty seconds remaining in the game. Burton is now just two goals away from 600 for his career.
In goal, Sikich made 26 saves for Motor City, while Greg Hewitt stopped 53 shots for Elmira. With the win, the Mechanics improve their record to 31-36-7 with six games remaining in the season.
