Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
MCALLEN, TEXAS - The defending NBA Development League champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced Tuesday that guard Jerel McNeal (6-3, 200, Marquette) is replacing former teammate Mustafa Shakur (6-3, 190, Arizona) on the Western Conference All-Star Team in the 2011 NBA Development League All-Star Game, presented by SonoSite.
McNeal joins teammate Jeff Adrien (6-7, 245, UConn) on the team. It will mark the first time two Vipers players are taking part in the All-Star Game. Last year, three Vipers were chosen (Mike Harris, Antonio Anderson and Joey Dorsey), but only Harris participated. Anderson missed the game due to an injury and Dorsey missed the game because he was recalled by the Houston Rockets. Harris was the first Viper to ever participate in the game, scoring 14 points. C.J. Watson earned a spot in the 2008 All-Star Game, but earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Golden State Warriors, causing him to miss the game.
The game will take place on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. on Center Court at NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The game will be televised live on NBA TV, which be found on channel 310 on Time Warner Cable, 402 on Dish Network and 216 on DirecTV.
McNeal will also participate in the NBA D-League Haier Shooting Stars Competition during NBA Development League Dream Factory Friday Night presented by Haier at 10:00 p.m. at Center Court at NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
McNeal is averaging 18.6 points (fifth in the league), 4.0 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 33 games and starts. He is shooting 45.1% from the field, 34.6% from behind the arc and 82.4% from the foul line. He had the fifth-highest individual points output of the season with 40 against the Reno Bighorns on December 11, 2010.
Shakur, who earned a GATORADE Call-Up to the Washington Wizards on January 22, averaged 16.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 1.9 steals in 23 games and starts. He is currently on his second 10-day contract with the Wizards. Shakur is averaging 3.3 points, 1.7 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 9.3 minutes in six games off the bench.
