Owen Sound Attack News Release
It was a back and forth affair on a snowy night in Hamilton, but Adam McMaster's highlight reel goals were the difference in a 7-6 overtime win over the Bulldogs. Kaleb Pearson tied it with 25 seconds to play in regulation before McMaster won it in overtime.
It took until February for the Attack to meet the Bulldogs for the first time this season, and they would wrap up the season series in just two weeks as Owen Sound traveled to Hamilton on Wednesday night looking for a crucial two points. The snow didn't stop Bev from getting the boys safely to the FirstOntario Centre, where Mack Guzda got the nod once again. Guzda was stellar on Sunday, stopping 34/36 Otters shots for his 22nd win of the season. Zachary Roy was in net for Hamilton.
The first period flew by in Hamilton, unfortunately things didn't go in Owen Sound's favour. An early penalty went against the Attack, but the special teams unit was able to kill it off. Six seconds after the minor expired, Cameron Supryka capitalized and beat Guzda to put the Bulldogs up 1-0. After the goal, things opened up and the two teams began to play end to end hockey. At one point, the game went almost 10 minutes without a break in the action. The action included partial breakaways for Barret Kirwin and Kaleb Pearson, but they were unable to beat the Hamilton netminder. The Attack seemed to have the majority of the possession and were able to force turnovers in the offensive end, but they couldn't beat Roy and would head to the first intermission trailing 1-0. The http://MarkMcDade.com shots on goal after 20 were 11-10 in favour of Hamilton.
The Attack looked to tie things up heading into the second period against the Bulldogs, but it was Hamilton that would extend the lead early. Once again, Owen Sound took an early penalty that the Bulldogs would take advantage of. This time it was Jake Gravelle scoring from the slot to double the lead and put the Attack in a hole. Carter Robertson wasn't going to take it lying down, and he put the Attack on his back to tie up the game. After a strong forecheck, the puck made its way to Robertson who skated into the slot and fired it past Roy to put Owen Sound on the board. 30 seconds later, the Attack pressure led a bouncing puck to #2's stick, and he scored his 11th of the year and 2nd of the night to even things up. Three minutes later, Owen Sound converted on their first power play of the night with a laser from Sergey Popov. The Attack's leading scorer found himself near the dot and he wired it high past Roy for their first lead of the night. It didn't take long for Hamilton to respond with Nathan Staios scoring on the power play to even things up at 3, but the period wasn't done yet. Owen Sound scored again on the power play, this time with Kaleb Pearson making a no look pass to Deni Goure who tallied his 11th of the year to put the Attack up. The Bulldogs scored one more courtesy of Logan Morrison on the power play before time expired to knot the score at 4 apiece after 40 minutes of play. Owen Sound led in shots 24-20.
No longer at a disadvantage, Owen Sound started the third period hoping to avoid the penalty box. All four Bulldogs goals had been scored because of the power play, and the Attack coaching staff were not happy with the team's discipline. The Attack recorded the first five shots of the period, but were unable to beat Roy to start. Attack captain Aidan Dudas took an awkward fall shortly after the five minute mark in the corner and would have to be helped off the ice. Dudas would walk down the tunnel under his own power and would eventually return to the game. During his time away, Adam McMaster scored a highlight reel goal where he deked through the entire Bulldogs roster on his way to beating Roy high and restoring the 5-4 lead. With just over five minutes to play in regulation, Owen Sound went back to the penalty box. Isaac Nurse would convert almost immediately on the man advantage to tie things up at 5-5. With a minute remaining, the Attack coughed the puck up at their blueline and after a rush by Arthur Kaliyev, Tag Bertuzzi was there to knock in the rebound and give the Bulldogs a big 6-5 lead. Kade Landry would take a delay of game penalty with 47 seconds left to play and one final power play for the Attack to tie it up. On the power play, Owen Sound pulled Guzda in order to give themselves the best shot possible to tie the game. Sergey Popov fired a shot from the point, Kaleb Pearson got his stick on the deflection and it was past Roy to even things up at 6 with 25 seconds to play. Each team was content with playing for the extra point in overtime, and they skated to the end of regulation. Shots after 60 were 36-28 for Owen Sound.
The extra frame started with Tag Bertuzzi almost immediately scoring for the Bulldogs, but he couldn't beat the post behind Guzda. Adam McMaster would pick up the loose puck and he was off to the races. One highlight reel goal wasn't enough for #22 on the night, and he would go end to end before beating Roy for his second of the night and the game winner.
