McMahon Solid on Mound But Yard Goats Drop Final Game of Trip

Akron, OH - The Akron RubberDucks scored two runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and defeated the Hartford Yard Goats 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio. Hartford took a 1-0 lead on Cristopher Navarro's RBI double in the second inning and an impressive start by Chris McMahon kept it a 1-0 game until the sixth inning. McMahon worked a season-high 5.1 innings and allowed just one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts. The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Park on Tuesday to open up a six-game series against the New York Yankees affiliate, the Somerset Patriots.

The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game in the second inning off Akron starter Doug Nikhazy. Braxton Fulford led off the inning with a double, and scored on a two-out double by Cristopher Navarro, giving Hartford a 1-0 lead.

Chris McMahon was solid on the mound for the Yard Goats and retired 11 of 13 batters from the first through the fifth innings, including the side in order in the second. He worked around two baserunners in the fifth with consecutive strikeouts to end the inning.

The Yard Goats had some chances to add to their 1-0 lead with leadoff walks in the fourth and fifth, and then first and second base with nobody out in both the sixth and seventh inning. Hartford was 1-11 with RISP and left 9 men on base.

Petey Halpin led off the sixth with a single and was replaced at first base by Angel Martinez who reached on a fielder's choice. Jose Tena followed with a single to right field, but a throwing error by Zac Veen attempting to get Martinez at third base allowed the tying run to score. McMahon was replaced by reliever Nick Kuzia, who got a couple of ground balls to work out of a bases loaded jam.

With the game tied 1-1 in the eighth inning the RubberDucks scored two runs on four consecutive singles off reliever Austin Kitchen. Martinez led off with an infield hit and Tena followed with a bunt single. Jonathan Rodriguez gave Akron its first lead with an RBI single to center field, scoring Martinez to make it 2-1. Juan Brito would conclude the rally with an RBI single, scoring Tena and it was 3-1.

The Yard Goats got the tying run to the plate with one out in the ninth inning as Bret Boswell walked. However, Cade Smith retired the final two batters to earn his first win of the season.

The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Park to open a six-game series against the New York Yankees affiliate, the Somerset Patriots. The game can be heard on AM 1410 WPOP, FM 100.9 and the iheart radio app. The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Park on Tuesday, June 6th (7:10 PM), and host the New York Yankees affiliate, the Somerset Patriots, for a six-game series.
