McKay Signs One-Year Deal with AHL's Rockford IceHogs
April 9, 2020 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Saskatoon Blades News Release
Rockford, IL - Riley McKay is turning into a professional hockey player.
The two-time winner of the Fan's Choice Award has signed an entry-level contract with the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League; the affiliate to the Chicago Blackhawks.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity that Rockford has given me," said McKay. "It was really tough having my last junior year end the way it did but I'm really excited for the upcoming season!"
McKay's long-standing junior hockey career came to a sudden end last month when the WHL paused the regular season due to the spread of the coronavirus. The league later cancelled the remainder of the season and playoffs, ending his career, along with the careers of fellow graduates Scott Walford and Nolan Kneen.
An assistant captain for the Blades in his final year, McKay spent his final two seasons in Saskatoon, collecting 65 points (31G, 34A) over 130 games. He finished his final year sixth in team scoring, reaching career highs in goals (19), assists (19) and points (38). Prior to his days at the Sasktel Centre, McKay spent two seasons south of the border in Spokane, establishing himself as one of the top enforcers in the WHL.
McKay's scoring touch is greatly complimented by his gritty, tenacious playing style. The 6'0", 203lbs left-winger piled up 517 penalty minutes over his 243-game career, and led the WHL in season-ending PIM's on two occasions.
The Saskatoon Blades would like to congratulate Riley on his new contract, and wish him the best in his career moving forward.
