
McKay backstops the Caps to victory; Mancinelli scores winner in shootout

DUBUQUE, IA - Goaltender Dryden McKay backstopped the Madison Capitols to a 5-4 shootout victory over the Dubuque Fighting Saints at Mystique Ice Center on Friday night.
Madison (18-18-1-2) is ranked seventh in the Eastern Conference with 39 points. Dubuque (18-14-6-2) sits in fourth place in the Eastern Conference with 44 points.
Centers Ludwig Stenlund and Michael Mancinelli netted the goals for the Capitols in the shootout. Center Alexander Steeves scored the lone shootout tally for the Fighting Saints.
Mancinelli put the Capitols on the board at 2:47 of the opening frame. Mancinelli grabbed the loose puck along the right wing boards and skated in on goaltender Cole Weaver. Mancinelli flipped a wrist shot past Weaver for his 11th goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Left wing Matias Maccelli tied the game at 1-1 with his fourth goal of the season at 7:52 of the first period. Center Alexander Steeves carried the puck into the left corner before finding Maccelli skating in from the left point. Maccelli snapped a wrister through traffic that beat McKay to put Dubuque on the board.
The Capitols took a 2-1 lead with center Cade Borchardt's unassisted tally at 16:17 of the opening stanza. Borchardt picked up the puck in the Saints zone near the blueline and turned to weave through players and sneak the puck over the goal line at the right post.
Madison ended the first period with a 3-1 lead with a goal from center Ludwig Stenlund with seven seconds remaining on the clock. Left wing Alec Broetzman carried the puck into the Saints zone along the right wing. Broetzman handed the puck off to Stenlund who wristed a shot from the right face-off circle and past Weaver for his ninth goal of the season.
Netminder James Durham replaces Weaver between the pipes for Dubuque for the start of the second period.
Left wing Verners Egle picked up his ninth goal of the season at 9:42 of the middle frame. Skating on the power play, Borchardt collected a pass from defenseman Colin Felix behind Dubuque's cage. Borchardt connected with Egle in the left face-off circle for a one-timer that beat Durham to give Madison a 4-1 advantage.
At 6:38 of the third period, the Fighting Saints capitalized on a power play opportunity with right wing Quinn Preston's 16th goal of the season. Left wing Taylor Schneider found Preston in the right face-off circle. Preston settled the pass and snapped a wrist shot that traveled through traffic and beat McKay high on his glove side to bring the score to 4-2.
The Fighting Saints cut the Capitols lead to one with forward Viktor Bovbel's fourth goal of the season at 10:30 of the final frame. On a delayed penalty, Bovbel had the puck in the left face-off circle and shot the puck under the arm of a Capitols defenseman before it slipped past McKay for a 4-3 game.
A fluke bounce off the end glass led to Maccelli's fourth goal of the season and second tally of the night at 13:10 of the third stanza to tie the game at 4-4. Maccelli's shot was high and bounce off the end glass, then off of the Capitols goaltender and into the net to even the contest.
McKay (17-13-1-2) earned his 17th win of the season with 43 saves on 47 shots. Durham (1-1-1-1) took his first shootout loss of the season as he stopped 15-of-16 shots. Weaver (10-7-3-0) made seven saves on 10 shots in the first period.
Madison went 1-for-1 on the power play. Dubuque was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Notables: Center Ludwig Stenlund has five points (3-2=5) in his last five games...Stenlund is on a three game point streak (2-1=3) and a two-game goal scoring streak (2-0=2)...Center Michael Mancinelli has four points (2-2=4) in his last four games.
