New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. - Deck McGuire rebounded from his shortest outing as a pro to throw six strong innings in a 3-1 New Hampshire win on Thursday morning over the New Britain Rock Cats. McGuire's second win of the season pushed the Fisher Cats to a 2-1 series win, their first in three tries against the Rock Cats this season.
McGuire, who lasted just one-third of an inning on Friday night, got some early run support from his offense. With one out in the third, Justin Jackson doubled before scoring on a single by John Tolisano. A double by Ryan Goins moved Tolisano to third before a wild pitch made it 2-0 New Hampshire.
McGuire's only trouble on the day came right after the Fisher Cats plated their first two runs. He allowed a one-out run-scoring single to Joe Benson to put runners at the corners in the bottom of third. After a pop-out, New Britain ran itself out of the inning with a failed double steal that resulted in the final out at home.
The rest of his outing was a breeze for McGuire, as he retired nine of the final ten batters he faced. He tossed six innings of one-run ball, giving up just three hits with a pair of walks and three strikeouts. He turned the ball over to Sam Dyson and Clint Everts, who combined for three scoreless innings to secure the series victory.
New Hampshire added one more insurance run in the seventh against losing pitcher David Bromberg (L; 1-1). Jackson singled to begin the inning, taking second on a wild pitch. A groundout moved him to third before he scored on a sac fly foul out by Ryan Goins to make it 3-1.
Jackson finished the game with two of the Fisher Cats nine hits, scoring two of their three runs. Goins extended his hitting streak to seven games while picking up his 21st RBI of the season.
The Fisher Cats return home on Friday night to begin a seven-game homestand with the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees) and the Portland Sea Dogs (Boston Red Sox). Friday's game features post-game Atlas Fireworks at 7:05 PM. For tickets and a full list of this week's promotions, visit www.nhfishercats.com.
RHP Yohan Pino (3-0, 2.16) takes the ball against the Thunder in the series opener. Radio coverage begins at 6:45 PM with Tom Gauthier and Charlie Sherman on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
